Recap: Massachusetts vs. Siena

Amherst, MA (SportsNetwork.com) - Trey Davis notched a game-high 28 points, as the Massachusetts Minutemen pulled away in the final minute to defeat the Siena Saints, 95-87, at Mullins Center in the season opener for both sides.

Davis shot 6-of-10 from the field, including 4-of-6 from 3-point range, and drained 12-of-17 at the foul line for UMass (1-0). Maxie Esho tallied 21 points and nine rebounds, Cady Lalanne had 15 points, 10 boards and six blocks, and Derrick Gordon registered 17 points and nine rebounds.

For Siena (0-1), Rob Poole just missed a double-double with 19 points and nine rebounds. Ryan Oliver netted 14 points, while Lavon Long and Patrick Cole poured in 12 apiece.

Siena outshot UMass from the floor in the opening half, 44.1 percent to 37.9 percent, as it carried a 41-36 lead into the break.

The Minutemen took control with a 9-0 run early in the second half to take an eight-point lead. The Saints climbed back to tie the game, 83-83, with 1:26 to play on a Cole layup, but UMass sealed the win by draining 12-of-14 free throws in the final 67 seconds.

The difference was made at the charity stripe, where UMass outscored Siena, 39-14.
