Davidson (11-3) at Massachusetts (9-7)
GAME NOTES: The Davidson Wildcats and Massachusetts Minutemen square off in an Atlantic 10 Conference tilt at the Mullins Center on Wednesday night.
Things could not have gone better for Davidson on Saturday, as the Wildcats shot 55.2 percent from the floor, made 12 3-pointers and led by as many as 38 in an 89-54 drubbing of Saint Louis. The win pushed Davidson to 11-3 overall and 2-1 in A-10 play.
Jordan Barham led the way with 21 points and nine rebounds, and Davidson had three more double-digit scorers in the resounding win. Brian Sullivan added 18 points, Jack Gibbs finished with 12 points and eight assists, and Tyler Kalinoski totaled 11 points, eight rebounds and six assists.
Kalinoski became the 46th player in Davidson history to score 1,000 points in his career. He ranks second on the team in scoring with 16.4 ppg and tops everyone on the glass at 6.2 rpg. Gibbs leads the way in several categories, including points (16.6 ppg), assists (5.0 apg) and steals (23) and is an efficient shooter everywhere on the floor.
Three other Wildcats -- Barham, Sullivan and Peyton Aldridge -- all average between 10.1 and 11.1 ppg in what has been a potent offense. At 84.6 ppg, the Wildcats rank fourth nationally.
UMass has opened Atlantic 10 Conference play with a 3-1 record thanks to a 66-62 road win over George Mason on Sunday. Cady Lalanne registered a double- double with 10 points and 14 rebounds, Trey Davis netted a game-high 14 points, and Jabarie Hinds contributed 11 for the victors. Derrick Gordon, who came in averaging over 11 ppg, was held without a field goal but made two critical free throws down the stretch to seal the victory.
Like Davidson, the Minutemen have proven that they can score with relative ease this season, entering Wednesday's contest owning a 72.7 ppg mark on 44.8 percent shooting from the floor. But the team has really struggled to hold it together defensively, allowing opponents to net 72.5 ppg this season on 43.5 percent shooting. Four double-digit scorers are doing their best to prevent offensive lapses for UMass. Maxie Esho leads the team at 13.5 ppg, while Lalanne's 12.3 ppg mark comes in at second, although his 9.0 rpg and 35 blocked shots are both team-highs. Davis (11.1 ppg) and Gordon (10.9) make up the rest of the foursome averaging double figures this season.
The Minutemen are 5-1 in the Mullins Center, but they have their work cut out for them against the hot-shooting Wildcats. Expect the visitors to prevail in what should be a nip-and-tuck battle.
