Los Angeles, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Norman Powell scored a game-high 25 points, leading six players in double figures, as the UCLA Bruins completely dominated the Montana State Bobcats, 113-78, in the season opener for both programs at Pauley Pavilion.
Kevon Looney came up a rebound short of a double-double as he tallied 20 points for the Bruins (1-0), followed by Bryce Alford who registered his first career double-double with 18 points and a game-high 12 assists. Isaac Hamilton accounted for 15 points, Thomas Welsh 14 off the bench and Tony Parker 11 points for the hosts.
The point total for the Bruins, who were able to open the season on their home floor despite a major flood in Pauley Pavilion over the summer, was the highest in a season opener since the team crushed Loyola Marymount by a score of 115-77 to kick off the 1993-94 campaign.
Under the direction of first-year head coach Brian Fish, the Bobcats (0-1) were led by Danny Robison and Michael Dison with 14 points apiece, while Marcus Colbert accounted for 12 points and seven assists and Blake Brumwell 10 points in the setback.
UCLA got off to a slow start and actually trailed by three points early on, but responded by shooting 52.8 percent from the field and 6-of-12 behind the 3-point line in the frame in order to take a commanding 60-32 lead at the break.
After converting only 39.3 percent from the floor through the first 20 minutes of action, MSU moved to 54.8 percent in the second half, but at the same time the Bruins connected on a sizzling 62.5 percent in order to cruise to the lopsided victory.
UCLA forced 22 turnovers and outscored the Bobcats at the free-throw line by a 26-13 margin.
