Riverside, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Cody Demps finished with just five points but drained the game-winning jumper with 17 seconds left to lift the Sacramento State Hornets to a 70-69 victory over the UC Riverside Highlanders in non-conference action at SRC Arena.

Mikh McKinney lead all scorers with 22 points for Sacramento State (1-1). Zach Mills tallied 15 points off the bench, and Eric Stuteville and Dylan Garrity netted 12 and 11 points, respectively.

For UCR (1-1), Taylor Johns logged 19 points and 11 rebounds, Jaylen Bland scored 17 points and Steven Thornton added 14 points.

Sacramento State scored the first seven points of the game but only took a two-point lead into intermission, 31-29. The Hornets outshot the Highlanders from the field in the opening 20 minutes, 46.4 percent to 41.4 percent.

UCR appeared to have taken control of the contest when a 7-0 run gave it a 62-55 lead with just over six minutes remaining. The hosts led by three when a McKinney layup with 1:15 left inched Sacramento State closer. Following a UCR turnover, Demps connected on the game-winning jumper. Bland missed a 3-pointer with four seconds left. An offensive rebound was collected by Austin Quick, but he missed another attempt at the win.

Sacramento State's bench outscored UCR's reserves, 20-8.
