Tulsa (14-5) at Tulane (13-7)
GAME NOTES: The Tulsa Golden Hurricane will go for their 10th consecutive victory on Tuesday evening as they travel to face the Tulane Green Wave in an American Athletic Conference showdown at Devlin Fieldhouse.
Since kicking off conference play, Tulsa is a perfect 7-0 in the AAC, which is part of the team's current nine-game win streak. The Golden Hurricane recently took down East Carolina by a narrow 66-64 margin to extend the run, and are now 5-2 away from their home court.
Tulane has struggled a bit as of late. The Green Wave have lost two games in a row, and three of their last four altogether. The team has dropped decisions to SMU (66-52) and to Memphis (57-55) to slip to 13-7 on the season overall, with a 4-4 mark in league play.
This will be the 18th meeting between the two programs on the court, with another regular-season game scheduled for later this season. Tulsa leads the series over Tulane, 12-5, and has taken each of the last three contests. In New Orleans, the teams are knotted at three games apiece.
Tulsa won by just two points in the last outing against East Carolina, but the contest wasn't as tight down the stretch as the score would indicate. A 3- pointer by ECU with just a few seconds left cut the Golden Hurricane lead and victory down to a single basket. The Golden Hurricane shot 41.7 percent from the floor in the win, and hit on 20-of-29 from the free-throw line to ease past the Pirates. James Woodard topped the Tulsa squad with 17 points in the win, while Shaquille Harrison added 13 points with five rebounds and five assists. D'Andre Wright grabbed a team-high 10 boards for the Hurricane.
It's been an individual battle amongst Woodard and Harrison for the team's scoring lead, and currently Woodard is on top. The guard leads the squad with 15.6 ppg this season, followed closely by Harrison's 15.4 ppg mark. The two players rank second and third in the American Athletic Conference in individual scoring, respectively. They're also the only two Tulsa players to average a double-digit scoring total this season. Still, the Golden Hurricane are managing 67.0 ppg on 42.6 percent shooting, and are holding opponents to just 61.1 ppg. Harrison's 67 assists are the most on the team, while Rashad Smith's 6.5 rpg mark is the best average for Tulsa in the category.
Tulane, which didn't perform its best offensively against Memphis on Saturday after shooting 36 percent from the field, dropped a two-point heartbreaker when the Tigers' Austin Nichols sank a jumper with three seconds left to play to give Memphis the victory. The cold shooting performance was what did the Green Wave in. Jay Hook tallied 13 points to lead Tulane in the loss, while both Jonathan Stark and Louis Dabney each chipped in with 10 points. Memphis shot 43.4 percent from the floor in the game, and Tulane's 16 turnovers didn't help either.
A once potent offense has started to come back down to Earth a bit as AAC competition rolls on. Tulane's offense currently averages 68.6 ppg (ranking second in the league), which is led by Dabney's 13.9 ppg effort. Hook (11.9 ppg) and Stark (11.8 ppg) round out a trio of double-digit scorers, with Stark owning a team lead in assists (85). The team's scoring defense has seen better days, but is still holding opponents to a mediocre 64.2 ppg on 43.3 percent shooting. Tre Drye leads the charge underneath the basket, as the big man pulls down 5.1 boards per outing for the Green Wave.
Tulane has the home advantage in this one, but that hasn't helped the Green Wave in either of their last two contests. Tulsa hasn't been blowing by opponents on the offensive end, but the team gets the job done with a strong all-around game. Look for the Hurricane to be hungrier than the Wave as they go for their 10th straight win.
