Tennessee Tech (3-2) at Tulane (4-1)
GAME NOTES: The Tulane Tournament comes to a close at Devlin Fieldhouse on Sunday afternoon, as the host Tulane Green Wave take on the Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles.
TTU played back-to-back games against Southeastern Louisiana as part of this event, winning at home on Nov. 24 (81-62) and losing on the road on Nov. 26 (86-68). The Golden Eagles are 3-2 on the season, with all three wins coming at home and both losses on the road.
Tulane also played SLU in its most recent game, hanging on for a 71-61 win. The Green Wave, who have played each of their games so far at Devlin Fieldhouse, is off to a fast 4-1 start to the season.
The programs have met just once before, with Tulane earning a 93-91 victory in December of 1989.
The Golden Eagles appeared in great shape to capture a win in their latest game up by 14 at intermission, but after shooting a red-hot 62.5 percent from the field in the first half, their production plummeted to just 22.6 percent over the final 20 minutes as they suffered the 18-point setback. The team should have probably found more opportunities for Charles Jackson, who shot 8- of-10 from the field for 17 points to go with 11 rebounds. Torrance Row and Josiah Moore also scored in double figures with 13 and 12 points, respectively.
On the season, TTU has performed admirably on both ends of the floor, shooting just shy of 44 percent from the field for 71.8 ppg while allowing only 62.8 ppg on less than 40 percent shooting. However, it 3-point (.253) and free- throw (.653) efficiency has lagged behind. Jackson is a nightly double-double threat with 13.4 ppg and 11.2 rpg while also blocking a pair of shots per contest. Dwan Caldwell (12. ppg), Moore (10.6 ppg) and Rowe (9.4 ppg) are also regular contributors.
The Green Wave had a much easier time with SLU in their most recent contest, as they led for the entire second half en route to a 10-point victory. Although they were outshot from the field, 47.9 percent to 46.3 percent, they earned extra possessions by winning both the rebounding (32-26) and turnover (20-13) battles. Louis Dabney led the way with 19 points while making 3-of-5 from 3-point range. Jay Hook also knocked down three 3-pointers on his way to 16 points and Jonathan Stark rounded out the double-digit scorers with 12 points.
Tulane has been efficient on the offensive end of the floor, shooting greater than 48 percent from the field for 76.9 ppg while boasting eight players who score at least 5.8 ppg. It also plays stellar defense by allowing just 59.4 ppg and owning a +3.2 turnover margin. Out in front of the balanced attack is Louis Dabney, who pours in 13.4 ppg. Hook (12.0 ppg) and Stark (9.6 ppg) are also consistently reliable options.
Considering Tulane's strong start to the season and TTU's struggles on the road, expect the Green Wave to close out their event in style.
