Memphis (11-7) vs. Tulane (13-6)
GAME NOTES: With each team trying to rebound from a loss in its last outing, the Memphis Tigers and Tulane Green Wave will clash head-to-head in an American Athletic Conference showdown at the Smoothie King Center on Saturday.
Memphis watched as a three-game win streak came to an end Wednesday against Tulsa, 73-55. It was the Tigers' third conference loss this season, and second defeat away from home. Headed out on the road again, Memphis will try to even a 1-2 road record.
Tulane fell for the second time in three outings Wednesday as the Green Wave dropped a 66-52 decision to SMU at home. The defeat dropped Tulane back to 13-6 this season, with a 4-3 mark in conference play. Although this is technically no on Tulane's home court, the Green Wave will still get a boost playing in front of the New Orleans crowd.
Memphis leads the all-time series against its new conference rival Tulane, 44-10. The two sides have met once already this season, which saw the Green Wave come away with a 74-66 victory in Memphis at the start of the new calendar year.
Memphis and Tulsa battled on Wednesday night, but it was the Golden Hurricane who were simply better in the 18-point decision. Memphis shot 41.7 percent from the floor in the loss, but only got double-digit scoring from two players. Avery Woodson tallied 15 points to pace the Tigers, adding in eight rebounds in 36 minutes of action. Austin Nichols chipped in with 12 points and six boards, but he also turned the ball over five times.Memphis held Tulsa to 40.3 percent shooting in the clash, including 2-of-12 from 3-point range, but three double-digit scorers for the Hurricane made the difference.
The scoring offense for Memphis this season has been hit or miss. The Tigers currently are averaging 68.3 ppg on 44.9 percent shooting, but have only one player netting a scoring figure in double digits. Nichols is that lone player, as the big man comes in scoring 12.7 ppg with a team-best 60 blocked shots and a second-best 5.9 rpg mark. Trahson Burrell is the next closest scorer to double figures for Memphis, chipping in 9.4 ppg. Shaq Goodwin leads a very talented Tigers rebounding squad with 6.1 boards per outing. The Tigers are allowing only 62.0 ppg to opponents, who are connecting on just 38.4 percent of their attempts from the floor.
Typically a rock solid offense, Tulane had a rough outing against SMU on Wednesday. The Green Wave connected on only 33.3 percent of their tries from the field, which included a 7-of-28 mark from beyond the 3-point arc. Tulane also hit on a dismal 13-of-24 shooting from the free-throw line in the 14- point loss. Louis Dabney scored 16 points to pace the Wave, while Jay Hook chipped in with 14 points and seven rebounds. SMU was allowed to shoot 43.1 percent in the contest, which included a 50 percent mark in the second half.
Dabney currently leads the Green Wave in scoring at 14.1 ppg through 19 games played. He's trailed in the category by Jonathan Stark (11.9 ppg) and Hook (11.8 ppg), who round out a trio of double-digit scorers for Tulane. Stark has shown he can be a playmaker for the Green Wave, having dished out a team-high 81 assists with 29 steals. Tulane's scoring average of 69.3 ppg is in the upper tier of AAC competitors, but the Green Wave also allow opponents to score 64.6 ppg on 43.3 percent shooting, which could be problematic. Tre Drye (5.1 rpg) and Hook (4.6 rpg) will try to cancel out a strong Memphis frontcourt.
Memphis can impose its will defensively against Tulane, which will make it difficult for the Green Wave to find scoring. But playing at the home of the New Orleans Pelicans may be able to provide enough of a boost for the Wave as they search for a rebound win.
