Troy Trojans VS. ULM Warhawks

ULM (4-7) at Troy (7-9)

GAME NOTES: The Troy Trojans take aim at their longest winning streak of the season, as they take on the ULM Warhawks in a Sun Belt Conference battle at Trojan Arena.

The Trojans are back home after a two-game road trip that resulted in wins over Arkansas State (98-84) and Arkansas-Little Rock (75-62). The two victories came on the heels of a stretch in which they lost six of seven contests. Troy is just 7-9 overall, but has an even 2-2 mark against Sun Belt competition. A matchup with Louisiana is next on the schedule.

While the Trojans seem to have figured things out, the Warhawks are still flying in reverse, with losses in back-to-back games and six of the last seven overall. Most recently, they were routed in a 61-36 final at home by Texas State. ULM is 4-7 on the season, which includes a 1-5 mark on the road. In the second half of this two-game road swing, the Warhawks will tangle with South Alabama.

This series has been dominated by Troy, which has won eight straight against ULM since the Warhawks won the first two meetings.

ULM really struggled to get into an offensive rhythm against Texas State. The Warhawks only connected on 26.4 percent of their total shots, while compiling just four field goals over the final 20 minutes. Tylor Ongwae was the only player to reach double figures as he tallied 12 points.

The Warhawks have rarely been able to put forth impressive offensive efforts. They are netting just 67.5 ppg and knocking down 42.2 percent of their shots from the field. Ongwae (14.9 ppg, 4.8 rpg) leads a trio of scorers averaging in double figures. The 6-foot-7 forward had tallied a total of 52 points in the two games prior to the bout with UALR. Amos Olatayo (13.9 ppg, 5.7 rpg) is the second option, although he managed just four points on a dismal 1-of-10 shooting performance against Texas State. Jayon James (10.6 ppg, 6.8 rpg, 4.0 apg) is an all-around contributor who ranks fifth in the league in assists.

Although Troy only shot 37.7 percent from the floor against UALR, it was able to escape with a victory thanks to a 30-12 scoring advantage from beyond the arc. The visiting Trojans also owned a 46-33 edge on the glass. Jeff Mullahey and Tevin Calhoun each scored a game-high 17 points in the contest.

Troy also struggles a bit on the offensive end, shooting just 41.6 percent from the floor and scoring 68 ppg. However, the Trojans are a stronger defensive squad than the Warhawks, holding foes to 68.1 ppg and 42.9 percent shooting. Antoine Myers (12.7 ppg, 4.6 rpg) and Hunter Williams (11.3 ppg, 3.1 apg) head up the offensive efforts. Myers is a more efficient scorer, connecting on 49.6 percent from the floor, while Williams connects on a lowly 31.9 percent. Kevin Thomas (9.9 ppg, 8 rpg) is also a solid scorer, as well as the fourth-best rebounder in the conference.

The Trojans showed resiliency by winning two games on the road. Now that they are back at home, where they are 5-1 this season, they should be able to capture a third straight victory.
