Detroit (3-2) at Toledo (2-2)
GAME NOTES: In a sub-regional title game of the Progressive Legends Classic, the Toledo Rockets take on the Detroit Titans at Savage Arena.
Detroit put itself into this contest with a 69-55 win over Maryland-Eastern Shore on Monday night. It was the second straight triumph for the Titans, who are now 3-2 overall. They will kick off a four-game homestand next against Bowling Green.
Toledo had no trouble reaching this game as it crushed Bucknell, 92-65, on Monday night. It was the first win for the Rockets, who are 2-2 overall, since they dropped consecutive bouts to VCU and Oregon. They will play back-to-back road games against Oakland and Cleveland State next.
There is a great deal of history between these two programs, with 55 previous meetings. The Rockets have won 32 of them, including a pair last season. The first was an 80-78 triumph as part of the 2K Sports Classic, and the second was a 91-75 victory in Toledo in a normal non-conference affair.
At the end of the first half, Detroit appeared to be in danger of stumbling against UMES. However, the Titans rebounded from a 30.8 percent shooting effort in the first 20 minutes, which yielded a 29-27 deficit at intermission, by draining an even 50 percent of their field goal attempts after the break. Ball control played a major role in the victory, with the Titans turning it over 20 times and scoring 29 points off of those mistakes. Anton Wilson led four players in double figures with 14 points in the win.
Juwan Howard Jr. (18 ppg, 6.2 rpg) remains the top scoring threat for the Titans, although that could change if he continues to shoot at just a 35.1 percent from the field. He struggled his way to 12 points on 3-of-9 shooting in the win over UMES. Wilson (12.8 ppg) has been a more consistent offensive threat, connecting on 62.2 percent of his shots from the floor, including 12- of-21 beyond the arc. Paris Bass (10.4 ppg) is the third member of the team scoring in double figures, doing so off the bench.
All five starters scored in double figures and Toledo shot 51.7 percent from the field in its dominating win over Bucknell. The Rockets outscored the Bison off of turnovers (12-0) and in second-chance points (20-10). Julius Brown spearheaded the effort, finishing with a game-high 20 points and seven assists.
With Brown at the controls, the Rockets are a solid offensive squad. Brown (16.5 ppg, 4.5 apg) leads the team in scoring, but is an unselfish player as he is posting sizable numbers in the assist department as well. As a team, the Rockets are scoring 77.3 points per game on 45.6 percent shooting. Brown obviously isn't the only offensive force, as Nathan Boothe (13.5 ppg, 5.5 rpg), Justin Drummond (11.5 ppg) and J.D. Weatherspoon (11 ppg, 7.5 rpg) all make an impact as well.
With its litany of scorers, expect the Rockets to close out play in this event with a decisive win.
