Chattanooga (4-5) at The Citadel (4-4)
GAME NOTES: Winless on the road this season, the Chattanooga Mocs give it another shot on Thursday as they clash with the Bulldogs of the Citadel in Southern Conference action.
The Mocs have come up empty in all four games away from home so far in 2014-15 and with another defeat at home versus Georgia just over a week ago, the team now finds itself sitting one game below .500 overall. The squad did rebound from the 31-point blowout versus the Georgia Bulldogs by securing a massive 104-50 thumping of Montreat on Monday at McKenzie Arena.
The Citadel, which kicked off the season in the All-Military Classic against SoCon foe VMI, has won two of the last three contests thanks to a 67-60 triumph over the Navy Midshipmen over the weekend at home in Charleston. The Citadel has won six straight home games and with a win the team would own the third-longest win streak since the turn of the century.
In terms of the all-time series, the Mocs are cruising with a mark of 57-16, the most recent meeting earlier this year resulting in an 82-78 victory for Chattanooga at McAlister Field House.
The Mocs scored the first points of the game against Montreat and never looked back, shooting not just 55.3 percent from the field but also 52.6 percent behind the 3-point line. Defensively, the hosts forced a staggering 28 turnovers and limited the visitors to only 18 made field goals. It also helped that Chattanooga secured a 46-26 advantage on the glass as well.
Converting four of his six chances beyond the arc, reserve Eric Robertson led all scorers for the Mocs with 16 points, followed by fellow backup Duke Ethridge with 14 points and seven boards. Greg Pryor and Ronrico White both dropped in 12 points, followed by Tre' McLean and Chuck Ester with 11 points apiece, the latter clearing eight boards.
Casey Jones, who scored only six points in 18 minutes in the last outing, is currently the only player scoring in double figures on the season for the Mocs with 14.0 ppg, shooting 52.1 percent from the floor and coming away with a team-best 6.1 rpg as well. A very balanced scoring attack, Chattanooga is putting up just 70.8 ppg even after the blowout win over Montreat.
Unlike the Mocs who had little trouble with their latest conquest, the Bulldogs were involved in a seesaw battle versus Navy, a game that featured 13 ties and 12 lead changes, with the hosts pulling away down the stretch. Jake Wright scored a game-high 21 points as he connected on 6-of-10 shots behind the 3-point line, followed by Ashton Moore with 13 points as he struggled from the floor (5-of-15). P.J. Horgan tacked on 12 points and C.J. Bray 10 and a team-high nine boards.
Outside of meetings with Florida State and Air Force thus far, the competition for the Bulldogs has not been all that tough really, which might explain how the program is holding foes to just 59.0 ppg. Unfortunately, the offense for the Citadel is only coming up with 66.6 ppg as it leans heavily on Moore and Horgan who are responsible for 17.1 and 13.4 ppg, respectively. Horgan has managed to make good on 64.2 percent of his field goal tries, but he has done little in the way of sharing the ball with a mere three assists in eight starts.
Against better teams the Bulldogs have their issues, but as long as the team can keep scoring to a minimum, there's a chance the hosts could prevail.
