TCU (13-3) at Texas Tech (10-7)
GAME NOTES: The TCU Horned Frogs have fallen on tough times after a torrid start to the season, and they will look to right the ship on Saturday evening when they step inside United Supermarkets Arena for a Big 12 Conference clash with Texas Tech.
After failing to win a conference game last season, TCU began the 2014-15 campaign with a 13-0 record to mark its best start in school history. However, the Horned Frogs have since lost three straight to effectively wipe away that momentum. Most recently, they came up short in overtime against No. 22 Baylor last Saturday, 66-59.
Meanwhile, Texas Tech has gotten off to a 0-4 start in Big 12 play and has dropped six of its last seven outings overall. The Red Raiders fell at Kansas State on Wednesday, 58-51.
Texas Tech holds a 76-47 lead in the all-time series with TCU.
Last weekend's overtime bout between TCU and the nationally-ranked Baylor Bears featured 11 lead changes and 18 ties. TCU went on a 9-4 run spurt late in the second half to take its largest lead of the game, at 49-44. However, the Horned Frogs simply ran out of gas the rest of the way as they shot just 1-of-6 from the floor in overtime. Defensively, they held a potent Baylor squad to 29.8-percent shooting for the game, including a 1-of-12 effort from the perimeter. But things were different on the offensive end, where only Kyan Anderson reached double figures for TCU with 16 points.
Anderson (13.6 ppg) is also the lone player averaging double figures for a Horned Frogs squad that has limited foes to just 34.5-percent shooting and 55.9 ppg this season. They enter play Saturday ranked in the top-25 nationally in blocks per game (6.2, 10th), field-goal percentage defense (3rd), rebounding margin (7.4, 22nd) and scoring defense (12th). TCU boasts a +10.9 rebounding margin across its 13 victories but is -8.0 in the three losses. The Horned Frogs also average 16.3 assists per game in wins and only 9.7 in those three defeats.
Texas Tech plays a very similar style of basketball. Devaugntah Williams is the only player averaging double figures with 11.7 ppg. And while the Red Raiders lack scoring depth, they have shined defensively, holding opponents to 38.5-percent shooting and only 60.0 ppg. They are also +5.2 in rebounding on the season.
Tech had four freshmen in the starting lineup against K-State. The Red Raiders were sharp defensively and won the battle on the boards, 38-30. However, they also shot just 31.4 percent from the floor in the second half as the Wildcats pulled away late. Robert Turner led all scorers with 16 points despite coming off the bench for the first time this season, while Williams scored 13 in the loss. Zach Smith (six points) chipped in with nine boards and five blocks.
This game pits two evenly-matched teams against one another, and both squads have been struggling of late. Both teams even suffered recent losses to Kansas State by nearly identical margins.
