Texas-San Antonio Roadrunners VS. Southern Utah Thunderbirds

Recap: TX-San Antonio vs. Southern Utah

San Antonio, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - A 3-pointer by A.J. Hess at the buzzer brought the Southern Utah Thunderbirds back for a thrilling 93-92 win over the Texas-San Antonio Roadrunners in a non-conference tilt at the Convocation Center.

Southern Utah (1-4) trailed by four points with less than five seconds remaining, but cut the deficit to a single point on a 3-point conversion by Race Parsons and then, after Larry Lewis, Jr. sank one of his two free throws for the Roadrunners (2-3), celebrated the Hess game-winner.

Hess finished with 20 points, shooting 4-of-8 behind the 3-point line, and also cleared seven rebounds for the visitors, while reserve James McGee was nearly perfect beyond the arc (7-of-8) as he tallied a team-best 21 points. Fellow backup Tyler Rawson responded with 15 points, eight rebounds and three blocked shots, followed by Travon Langston with 13 points and four assists before fouling out.

The Roadrunners were led by Ryan Bowie who paced all five starters in double figures with his game-high 29 points, followed by Jeromie Hill with 17 and nine boards. Kaj-Bjorn Sherman tacked on 16 points and seven rebounds, Keon Lewis 15 points and five assists and Lewis 11 points to go with six dishes in the setback.

Both sides shot the ball well from the field in the first half, converting at better than 56 percent, but it was UTSA that remained in charge thanks to 6- of-10 beyond the arc, en route to a 55-48 advantage at the break.

After hitting on 7-of-12 on the perimeter in the first half, the Thunderbirds took it to another level after intermission with 8-of-14 shooting on the outside, with the most crucial conversions coming in the final seconds.

In addition to outscoring the Roadrunners beyond the arc, 45-24, SUU's bench also outscored the UTSA reserves by a whopping 58-4.

The Thunderbirds are coming off a 2013-14 campaign in which they averaged only 59.0 ppg and finished a mere 2-27, with only one of those victories coming against another Division I program (North Dakota, 77-71).
