Southern Miss (5-7) at Texas-San Antonio (6-6)
GAME NOTES: Looking to end a four-game losing streak, the Southern Miss Golden Eagles will hit the road to take on the Texas-San Antonio Roadrunners in a Conference USA battle at the Convocation Center Thursday.
Southern Miss has lost four games in a row, and five of its last six altogether. The Golden Eagles sport a 5-7 record this season, with a dismal 0-5 ledger away from home. The team was taken down by Louisiana Tech, 83-70, in its latest outing.
Texas-San Antonio is 6-6 this season with a 1-1 mark in conference play so far. The Roadrunners have won two of their last three contests, with a 71-61 victory over North Texas serving as the most recent clash.
The two sides met only once last season, which also provided the first-ever meeting between Southern Miss and UTSA. The Golden Eagles came away with a hefty 85-56 victory in Hattiesburg last February.
Although Southern Miss shot 62.8 percent from the floor in the team's loss to Louisiana Tech, the Golden Eagles still took nearly 20 fewer attempts than the Bulldogs in the contest, and only had nine attempts from the free-throw line. Southern Miss found itself down by 16 points headed into halftime, which allowed Louisiana Tech to coast through the second period. Chip Armelin netted 23 points to pace the Eagles, while Matt Bingaya scored 18 and Davon Hayes added 10. Rasham Suarez contributed seven points, eight assists and six rebounds in the loss.
After a 2013-14 season in which the Golden Eagles were one of the better offensive and all-around squads in Conference USA, the team saw a serious swing in personnel over the course of the offseason. Now the Golden Eagles enter Thursday's matchup netting just 62.8 ppg (tied for second-worst in the conference), and are allowing 69.3 ppg to opponents on 46.1 percent shooting. Bingaya has been a bright spot for Southern Miss with a 15.6 ppg mark, also adding in a team-best 5.7 rpg. Armelin and his 12.8 ppg is second on the squad in scoring. But there's a drop off after that, although Suarez's 47 assist total is a staple in the team's offensive efforts.
Not only was UTSA able to overcome a three-point halftime deficit against North Texas in the Roadrunners' last outing, but the visiting squad also had to deal with four double-digit scorers in the contest. Led by 23 points from Jeromie Hill and a 50 percent shooting mark from the floor in the second half, UTSA dug itself out of the hole. Ryan Bowie chipped in with 16 points and eight rebounds in the 10-point win, and Keon Lewis added 16 points of his own for the Roadrunners.
It has certainly been an up-and-down season already for UTSA, which finds itself with 3-3 marks away from home and at the Convocation Center. Hill leads the unit in scoring, averaging 15.5 ppg with a 7.6 rpg mark to top the squad in the category. Lewis (14.8 ppg) and Bowie (14.4 ppg) round out a trio of double- digit scorers for the Roadrunners, who are netting 72.8 ppg this season. But a 73.8 ppg allowed margin for UTSA is second-worst in Conference USA, which means the home squad will have to step up against the Golden Eagles defensively.
Although teams are posting big scoring figures against UTSA, the Roadrunners should feel relatively safe about playing at home against a Southern Miss team still desperate for some sense of continuity on the offense end.
