Loyola-Chicago (2-1) at Texas-San Antonio (2-1)
GAME NOTES: The Texas-San Antonio Roadrunners have yet to play a road game this season, as they host the Loyola-Chicago Ramblers in a non-conference clash at the Convocation Center on Tuesday.
Loyola-Chicago opened the season with a 2-0 mark, winning consecutive home games against Rockhurst and McKendree. But the Ramblers were woken up from their 2-0 dream as they were defeated by Michigan State, 87-52, in their most recent outing.
UTSA took on Huston-Tillotson in the team's season opener and won, but then fell three nights later to Texas-Pan American. The Roadrunners got back in the win column with a victory over Texas State, 80-67, on Saturday in their last outing.
This meeting between Loyola and UTSA will be the first ever among the sides on the hardwood.
Going from playing a team like McKendree to turning around and facing Michigan State had to be a shock to the Ramblers. The Spartans easily dominated Loyola, shooting 63.2 percent from the floor and an even 50 percent from 3-point range en route to the 35-point victory. The Ramblers connected on 34.5 percent of their field goal tries in the game, but only got a double-digit point performance out of Milton Doyle (13 points, five turnovers). Donte Ingram scored eight points and led the team in rebounding, pulling down five boards.
Doyle leads a trio of players for Loyola-Chicago in double-digit scoring figures, netting 15.7 ppg through three contests. Doyle is shooting 54.5 percent from the floor, and tops the squad with 15 assists (and 12 turnovers). Christian Thomas is averaging 13.3 ppg, and Montel James adds 10.3 ppg for the Ramblers, who score an average of 67.0 points per outing. After that loss to Michigan State, the Ramblers are also giving up 71.0 ppg to opponents.
UTSA had a very successful night offensively in the team's latest win over Texas State, shooting 51 percent from the floor for the game and adding 26- of-34 from the free-throw line. Jeromie Hill led the Roadrunners with 16 points and 11 rebounds for the double-double, while Keon Lewis and Christian Wilson each contributed 15 points to the win. Ryan Bowie netted 14 points with nine rebounds, and Larry Lewis Jr. chipped in with 13 points in the 13-point victory.
Through three games, five players for UTSA average scoring figures in the double digits, led by Keon Lewis's 17.7 ppg mark. Hill chips in with 15.3 ppg, followed by Wilson at 15.0 ppg and then Bowie with 14.3 ppg. Larry Lewis rounds out that group of five with 10.0 ppg, but there's a significant drop off from his 10.0 ppg to the next player's line of 5.7 ppg. Still, the Roadrunners are netting 78.0 points per outing through three games, compared to 68.0 ppg for opponents.
The Roadrunners get the advantage of being home in this non-conference clash, but they also have a very talented offense led by Lewis. With a plethora of scoring options, UTSA may just overwhelm the Ramblers.
