Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders VS. Kent St. Golden Flashes

Kent State (22-11) at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (20-13)

GAME NOTES: The Islanders of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi roll out the red carpet for the Kent State Golden Flashes in the second round of the seventh annual CollegeInsider.com Tournament on Monday night at American Bank Center.

The Islanders, who represent the Southland Conference, registered their 20th win of the campaign last week with a 75-69 victory over Florida Gulf Coast in the first round of the tourney, marking just the fourth time in program history that the squad has reached that win plateau.

As for the Golden Flashes, members of the Mid-American Conference, they went from falling to Akron in the conference tournament (53-51) to defeating Middle Tennessee in the first game of this event last Wednesday, 68-56.

As far as the all-time series between the squads is concerned, Kent State has won three of the previous four meetings, the most recent of those taking place in Ohio back in 2009 when the hosts capturing an 85-76 victory. The lone win for the Islanders was an 81-73 decision back in early 2007.

For the winner, the next opponent will be determined based on the remaining teams in the event.

The Golden Flashes turned the ball over just four times in the first round of the tourney last week and survived 2-of-9 shooting behind the 3-point line and 34.5 percent accuracy from the floor in the second half in order to capture the double-digit win. Jimmy Hall led the way with 20 points and eight rebounds, followed by Derek Jackson who finished with 16 points, thanks in large part to his 4-of-8 effort behind the 3-point line. Kris Brewer pitched in 12 points and six assists in a reserve role.

Even though Kent State has four players averaging in double figures through 33 games, the team is generating a mere 65.8 ppg. Hall leads the charge with 15.6 ppg and is also tops with 7.3 rpg, while Devareaux Manley tacks on another 13.1 ppg, having accounted for 104 of the unit's 233 3-pointers. Brewer (11.0 ppg) and Jackson (10.4 ppg) also play significant roles on offense, the latter driving the group at that end of the floor with his 106 dishes, while making a team-best 56 steals at the other end.

John Jordan was again the star of the show for the Islanders with his game- high 20 points, to go along with seven assists, four rebounds and three steals in the win over Florida Gulf Coast. Also playing a huge role for TXAMCC was Bryce Douvier with a double-double consisting of 17 points and 11 rebounds, all of those boards coming at the defensive end, followed by Jelani Currie with 12 points off the bench as he shot a perfect 5-of-5 from the field, including 2-of-2 behind the 3-point line.

The only player to start every game this season for the Islanders, Jordan leads the team in scoring with 15.7 ppg and is also tops in the passing department with 5.2 apg. As well-rounded as any player in the nation, Jordan is the only one in the country that can boast of having scored at least 1,500 points, pulled down 500 rebounds and handed out 500 assists in his career, making him just the second player in conference history to achieve the feat. Rashawn Thomas pitches in with 13.8 ppg as the only other double-digit scorer for the Islanders, who generate 66.7 ppg.

Playing at home should be a huge plus for the Islanders and provide much comfort and support to Jordan who will again be expected to carry this group to new heights.

Predicted Outcome

Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 69, Ken State 63
