Tulsa (9-5) at Temple (12-4)
GAME NOTES: A pair of teams unbeaten in the American Athletic Conference tangle at the Liacouras Center on Saturday afternoon, as the surging Temple Owls entertain the Tulsa Golden Hurricane.
The Owls, who were victorious at Tulane, 64-56, on Wednesday, are riding a six-game win streak. Temple is undefeated at the Liacouras Center this season (7-0).
The Golden Hurricane is on a four-game win streak. Tulsa is coming off a 72-54 thrashing of Houston last Sunday.
This is the third meeting between these two schools. The Golden Hurricane won in December of 1995 in Philadelphia, and the following season in Tulsa as well.
On Wednesday, Jaylen Bond notched a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds for the Owls. Quenton DeCosey knocked down a game-high 15 points, while Will Cummings and Morgan each scored 14 in the winning effort.
Temple has been a totally different team since transfers Morgan and Devin Coleman have come into the fold. In the 10 games prior to Morgan and Coleman becoming eligible on Dec. 18, the Owls averaged 4.5 3-pointers per game. Since Dec. 18, Temple is averaging 9.2 treys per contest. Not only have the Owls been sinking more shots from beyond the arc, but the accuracy has also increased recently from 25.9 percent prior to the arrival of the two transfers to 36.4 percent. Bond (8.1 ppg) leads the conference with 8.2 rebounds per game. Cummings, DeCosey and Morgan all average just above 14 ppg, but it's the defense that's really picked up for coach Fran Dunphy's squad. Last season, they allowed 78.1 ppg, but this season that figures sits at just 61.7 ppg. They held nationally-ranked Kansas to only 52 points in a 25-point blowout win in Philadelphia on Dec. 22. The Owls are also doing a good job taking care of the basketball, committing 10.1 turnovers a game.
The Golden Hurricane has had plenty of time to rest following last Sunday's triumph. Shaquille Harrison and James Woodard both produced 18 points in that bout. Rashad Smith added 16 points and a game-high nine rebounds. The Golden Hurricane overcame 0-of-10 shooting out on the perimeter by outscoring the visitors at the charity stripe, 26-8.
Harrison and Woodard are both averaging close to 15 ppg. Smith (6.6 rpg) leads the team in rebounding. The downfall for Tulsa may be at the charity stripe thanks to a pedestrian 64.2 percent. Like Temple, Tulsa's defense has been solid this season in allowing just 62.1 ppg. The success for the Golden Hurricane comes from inside play. Tulsa is shooting just 22.7 percent from 3- point range, but that jumps to 53.7 otherwise. Frank Haith, in his first season as head coach, has watched his team improve taking care of the ball. In the first six games, the Golden Hurricane totaled 55 assists and 88 turnovers. Since then, Tulsa has compiled 99 helpers and 82 miscues.
The key for both teams in this game will be turnovers. Both defenses have been stellar thus far. The Owls have shown the ability to be patient with the basketball, and Morgan's quick release from distance may be too much for the Golden Hurricane to slow down. A victory in this game could propel the Owls closer to the top-25.
