Temple Owls VS. SMU Mustangs

SMU (12-4) at Temple (12-5)

GAME NOTES: A pair of 12-win teams mix it up at the Liacouras Center on Wednesday night when the SMU Mustangs visit the Temple Owls in an American Athletic Conference clash.

These programs have met four times previously, with Temple taking three of them after splitting last season's home-and-home series.

Temple took a six-game win streak into last Saturday's game against Tulsa and appeared on its way to seven in a row before hitting a cold stretch in the second half. The Owls led by 11 with over 10 minutes to play and went the next eight minutes without hitting a field goal. The subsequent 19-1 run lifted Tulsa to a 63-56 victory.

To make matters worse, TU senior point guard Will Cummings left the game with a strained muscle in his left leg and his status is day-to-day going forward.

Jaylen Bond recorded his third consecutive double-double with a game-high 14 rebounds to go with 16 points, while Quenton DeCosey added 12 points on 3- of-14 shooting. Jesse Morgan had an even tougher day from the field, making just one of 17 attempts and missing all 13 of his 3-point tries.

Morgan came in averaging over 14 ppg but saw that dip by two. DeCosey tops the team in scoring at 14.0 ppg, while Cummings sits at 13.6 ppg with a team-best 3.9 apg.

While the offense can be erratic, Temple has consistently locked down on the defensive end to the tune on 61.8 ppg allowed on only 38.2 percent shooting.

The Mustangs have won 10 of their last 11 games and are 3-1 in conference play following a 70-61 road win over UCF on Sunday. Nic Moore finished with 21 points, Ben Moore and Markus Kennedy netted nine points each, and Yanick Moreira added eight points and eight rebounds.

SMU had one of its best shooting games of the season, connecting on 57.1 percent from the floor, with Moore making five 3-pointers and 8-of-14 overall. Moore drained two from long range early in the second half to give SMU a double-digit lead, and the Mustangs led comfortably the rest the way.

Moore is the prototypical do-it-all guard for the Mustangs, leading them in scoring (14.6 ppg), assists (4.9 apg) and steals (24). Moreira (12.3 ppg) and Frazier (11.0 ppg) round out a trio of double-digit scorers for an offense that is netting 70.1 ppg on 48.4 percent shooting from the floor. SMU plays some stifling defense as well, allowing just 60.3 ppg.

Temple was undefeated at home prior to Saturday's anomaly. Unless the Owls can contain the Mustangs' consistently potent offense, another blemish could be added to the loss column.

Predicted Outcome

SMU 69, Temple 61
