TCU HORNED FROGS

TCU Horned Frogs

TCU Horned Frogs VS. Washington St. Cougars

Washington State (0-1) at TCU (1-0)

GAME NOTES: The TCU Horned Frogs and the Washington State Cougars will collide on Monday night at the Wilkerson-Greines Athletic Center for a non-conference battle.

Washington State lost its first game of the season, falling in a 65-52 decision to Texas-El Paso on the road. The loss also came in the first game for Ernie Kent as head coach for the Cougars, who went just 10-21 last season, the last for Ken Bone. The Cougars will play their home opener next, hosting Idaho State on Friday.

TCU got off to a much better start to the season, rolling past Prairie View A&M, 71-54. The Horned Frogs are far from a basketball power, as they have had just one winning season in the last 10 years. Last season, was a low point for the program, as TCU finished at 9-22, its first season below 10 wins since 2006. The Horned Frogs host New Orleans next as part of a five-game homestand to start the campaign.

Last season, TCU escaped with a 64-62 win over Washington State in Pullman, giving the Frogs a leg up in the all-time series, 2-1.

One of Kent's toughest tasks with Washington State is improving the team's offensive production. The Cougars were last in the Pac-12 in scoring (62.4 ppg) and field goal percentage (.400) last season. They did not show much improvement in Kent's first game, finishing with only 52 points on 35.2 percent shooting. They did play well defensively, however, limiting the Miners to just 34.9 percent shooting.

DaVonte Lacy maintained his post as top scorer for the Cougars in the losing effort, finishing with 15 points, but on just 3-of-12 shooting. Lacy averaged 19.4 points per game last season, while shooting 42.9 percent from the floor. In the loss to UTEP he also secured seven rebounds. Ike Iroegbu and Que Johnson each tallied 10 points as the other double-digit scorers for the Cougars, who got nine points combined from the rest of the roster. Johnson did his work off the bench, while also logging 11 rebounds in 28 minutes. Josh Hawkinson had seven points and eight boards, but he missed more shots than he made (3-of-10).

TCU was not much better than Washington State on offense last season, the team ranking last in the Big 12 in scoring (63.6 ppg) and field goal percentage (.403), while also struggling on the boards (29.9 rpg). The Horned Frogs looked better against Prairie View A&M, for what that's worth, connecting on 45.1 percent from the field, while collecting 50 rebounds.

Trey Zeigler led four players in double figures for TCU in the season-opening win. He recorded 14 points, as well as seven rebounds, while connecting on 6- of-8 shots from the field. Kyan Anderson, who led the Frogs in scoring last season (17 ppg), was the only player on the team to take more than 10 shots, but he connected on just 4-of-13 attempts to finish with 12 points. Karviar Shepherd recorded a double-double for the cause, adding 10 rebounds to his 13 points. Meanwhile, Kenrich Williams played well in a reserve role, tallying 11 points and eight rebounds in 26 minutes off the bench.

The duel between Lacy and Anderson is the main attraction in this one. Whichever scorer is more efficient will likely lead his team to victory. Expect Anderson to do so at home.
