Kansas State (13-13) at TCU (15-10)
GAME NOTES: Coming off one of their biggest wins of the season, the TCU Horned Frogs now turn their attention toward the visiting Kansas State Wildcats for a Big 12 Conference tussle at Wilkerson-Greines Athletic Center on Wednesday night.
TCU was streaking along during the non-conference portion of the schedule, opening the campaign at 13-0, but since the Big 12 slate has kicked in victories have been much harder to come by. However, on Valentine's Day the squad managed to bring an end to a seven-game slide with a stunning 70-55 romp over Oklahoma State in Fort Worth. Unfortunately, it was still just the second league win in 12 chances for the Frogs.
Over on the other side, the Wildcats entered the week eighth in the league standings with a mark of 6-7 following a surprising win of their own on Saturday, a 59-56 triumph over 17th-ranked Oklahoma at home. Like TCU, the Wildcats also halted a lengthy slide with their win, snapping a five-game losing streak.
Kansas State won the first meeting of the season last month by a score of 58-53 at home, which means the Wildcats are now ahead in the all-time series by a count of 8-2. The last win for TCU in the relationship took place during the first round of the 1999 NIT at Bramlage Coliseum.
Suffering through their longest losing streak in a decade, the Wildcats took care of business in front of the home crowd on Saturday by squeezing out a three-point win against Oklahoma, completing the season sweep of the Sooners for the second time in the last three campaigns. Marcus Foster tallied 14 points on just 3-of-9 shooting from the floor, while Nino Williams accounted for 13 points and eight rebounds, but he too struggled from the field (2- of-12) as the team survived with a mere 26.5 percent accuracy overall. The one saving grace for KSU was that it connected on 28-of-36 shots at the free-throw line, compared to 13-of-17 for the visitors.
On a team that is scoring just 64.0 ppg, Foster is responsible for 14.0 ppg, thanks in large part to his 39.4 percent accuracy behind the 3-point line. Williams pitches in with another 11.6 ppg, but he is someone who has almost completely avoided the trappings of perimeter shooting altogether. Thomas Gipson, the most experienced starter this season for the Wildcats, adds another 11.0 ppg, making good on 53.7 percent of his field goal tries for a unit that has held the competition to 63.2 ppg.
TCU missed all nine shots from 3-point range while hosting Oklahoma State over the weekend, but the team made up for it with 52.0 percent accuracy from the floor overall, and a season-high 78.3 percent at the free-throw line. It also helped that the defense forced 17 turnovers and held the Cowboys to a mere 3- of-16 shooting out on the perimeter.
Kyan Anderson, who moved into seventh place on the school's all-time scoring list, tallied 14 points and handed out a season-high seven assists, followed by Trey Zeigler with 13 points on a perfect 5-of-5 from the floor. Amric Fields tacked on 12 points off the bench and Karviar Shepard 10, while Kenrich Williams posted eight points and a team-high eight rebounds.
Over the last five games, TCU has had a different leading scorer four times, which might suggest a balanced offensive attack, but that doesn't seem to be the case considering Anderson is the only player scoring in double figures overall with his 13.1 ppg. He has thrived at the free-throw line (.869) and has been more than generous with his passing (102 assists), not to mention getting heavily involved at the defensive end with a team-best 37 steals. Still, the Horned Frogs are a group that could be doing so much better if not for their dismal 60.1 percent accuracy at the charity stripe.
Assume that both sides will have a letdown when they take the floor on Wednesday in Fort Worth, but at least the Horned Frogs have the luxury of being at home and that should certainly help them in pursuit of a rare two- game, conference win streak.
