Recap: Stephen F Austin vs. Northern Iowa

Nacogdoches, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - Paul Jesperson's putback with 39 seconds remaining in overtime put Northern Iowa ahead and the Panthers held on for a 79-77 victory over Stephen F. Austin on Tuesday, ending the Lumberjacks' 34- game home winning streak.

Jesperson's layup off a Wyatt Lohaus miss gave Northern Iowa a 78-77 lead in a back-and-forth extra session. Thomas Walkup then missed a 3-point attempt for Stephen F. Austin and Wes Washpun made 1-of-2 at the line for a two-point edge with 12 seconds to play.

Demetrious Floyd had a great chance to force a second extra period with a brilliant spin move that opened the lane, but his driving finger roll fell off the rim as time expired.

Floyd and Walkup each scored 20 points for the Lumberjacks (1-1), who had the nation's second-longest home winning streak and hadn't lost on its home floor since Feb. 15, 2012. Stephen F. Austin was trying to keep pace with Duke, which has the longest home winning streak at 35 games.

Marvin Singleton scored 15 points to lead a balanced attack for Northern Iowa (2-0). Deon Mitchell chipped in 14 points and Seth Tuttle scored 13. Lohaus and Washpun each contributed 11, while Jesperson finished with nine.

The Panthers had the largest lead of the first half at six points, but the Lumberjacks battled back and carried a 39-35 edge to the break. Stephen F. Austin led by as many as eight early in the second half, but consecutive threes by Lohaus capped an 8-0 surge by Northern Iowa and tied the game at 52-52 with 13 1/2 minutes left in regulation.

It remained tight from there and a three-point play by Mitchell with 54 seconds left tied it for the Panthers at 70-70. Both teams turned it over on their next possessions and a Floyd heave from beyond half-court was well off the mark at the buzzer.
