Recap: Stanford vs. Washington St
Stanford, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Chasson Randle scored 17 of his 18 points in the second half to help the Stanford Cardinal top Washington State, 71-56, Friday in the Pac-12 opener for each team.
The Cardinal (9-3, 1-0 Pac-12) recovered from a slow start in the first half and shot 64 percent after the break to pull away from the Cougars.
Stefan Nastic added 16 points and seven rebounds for Stanford, and Anthony Brown contributed 13 points, 11 boards and five assists.
Washington State (6-7, 0-1) was led by Josh Hawkinson with 11 points, all from the free throw line. He also had a game-high 15 rebounds.
Trailing 27-24 at the half, the Cougars missed their first six shots of the second as Stanford built a 13-point lead. Jordan Railey's jumper 5 1/2 minutes into the half finally ended the drought.
Although the Cougars finally hit from the floor, they struggled at the line the entire game, finishing just 24-of-39 from the charity stripe.
The Cardinal hit eight straight shots to end the game and led by as much as 16.
Early in the contest, it was Stanford unable to get on the board. It missed its first seven shots to open the game before Nastic's layup ended Washington State's 8-0 run.
In the final three minutes of the first half, the Cardinal took the lead with a 9-2 spurt. Marcus Allen scored four in the run, and Nastic's layup with two seconds remaining before half put Stanford up three.
