Delaware (0-3) at Stanford (3-1)
GAME NOTES: The Stanford Cardinal return to the friendly confines of the Maples Pavilion on Tuesday night as they play host to the Delaware Blue Hens in a non-conferance matchup.
Johnny Dawkins went up against his mentor this past weekend and came out on the short end of a 70-59 decision to Mike Krzyzewski and his Duke Blue Devils. The loss was in the championship game of the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic in Brooklyn, NY and followed three straight wins to open the 2014-15 season for Stanford.
Monte Ross' Blue Hens have had a tough time of it in the early going. Delaware has yet to play a home game and has opened the season with three straight road losses at Liberty (61-55), Cal Poly (78-60) and Cal State Bakersfield (70-52).
Delaware hit rock bottom with its lopsided loss to previously winless Bakersfield. The Blue Hens shot a miserable .267 from the floor in the game (12-of-45) and actually shot a little better from behind the arc (.318). Despite the poor offensive showing, there were some positives to take from the loss. Devonne Pinkard had a strong game, recording a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Cazmon Hayes chipped in with 12 points, while Kory Holden finished with 10.
Poor shooting has plagued Delaware thus far, with the team converting a meager 29.4 percent from the field, including just 29.9 percent from 3-point range. Hayes is averaging a solid 17.0 ppg this year, but it is volume driven, as he converts just 37.5 percent of the time. Holden is next in line with 11.7 ppg, while also serving as the team's top distributor (4.0 apg).
Stanford really did a solid job in slowing Duke down and actually held the usually explosive Blue Devils under 40 percent shooting. Unfortunately, the Cardinal suffered the same fate, shooting .361 overall, including a mere 3- of-14 from behind the arc. Chasson Randle continued his electric start to the year, pouring in 22 points in a losing effort. Center Stefan Nastic held his own against Duke's much-hyped freshman center (Jahlil Okafor). Nastic recorded a doubl-double with 13 points and 13 boards. Athony Brown was the only other player to finish in double digits in the loss, tallying 11 points.
The output against Duke was a season low and 15 points fewer than the previous season low. Offense really hasn't been a problem for Stanford this season, as the team is averaging 76.5 ppg and doing so on a healthy .449 shooting. Randle is one of the Pac-12's top players and is off to a fast start with a team-best 18.8 ppg. Nastic has been an anchor in the middle, averaging a near double- double with 15.8 points and 9.0 rebounds per game. Brown is strong inside and out, averaging 14.0 ppg and 8.0 rpg, while converting half of his 3-point attempts (6-of-12).
The Cardinal should dominate this game from start to finish. Delaware is taking a step up in competition here and hasn't competed all that well against its first three opponents.
