Connecticut (9-6) at Stanford (12-4)
GAME NOTES: Looking to build on a two-game win streak, the Stanford Cardinal will put conference play on pause as they entertain the Connecticut Huskies in a non-conference affair Saturday at Maples Pavilion.
Stanford has been victorious in two consecutive contests, and has won six of its last seven altogether, with a double-overtime loss to UCLA standing in the way of a much longer win streak. Stanford took down California, 69-59, on Wednesday in the team's last outing.
UConn had won three games in a row before the team took a tumble against Tulsa on Tuesday, 66-58. The defending national champs, who are 9-6 this season and 2-1 away from home, will take a quick break from American Athletic Conference action to face Stanford.
This will be the sixth all-time meeting between the two sides. The Huskies own a 4-1 all-time series lead over the Cardinal, but the last time the teams faced off in 2013, it was Stanford that came away with the 53-51 win.
Connecticut fell behind Tulsa by six points at halftime on Tuesday after a poor first half offensively. The Huskies did made a valiant effort in the second half behind 52 percent shooting from the floor, but came up short. Ultimately the Golden Hurricane held on for the win after connecting on 50 percent in the second period. Daniel Hamilton led UConn in the defeat with 16 points and 12 rebounds for the double-double, while Terrence Samuel chipped in 12 points and Amida Brimah added 11. Ryan Boatright contributed eight points and a team-high six assists in the losing effort.
Boatright has been the go-to player for UConn this season after the team lost star point guard Shabazz Napier to the NBA in the offseason. Boatright enters Saturday's clash netting 16.3 ppg and has dished out 67 assists. Brimah (11.0 ppg) and Hamilton (10.7 ppg) round out a trio of double-digit scorers for the Huskies through 15 games. Hamilton's 6.1 rpg mark this season is second on the squad behind Kentan Facey's 6.5 boards per outing. The Huskies are netting 65.9 ppg on 45.7 percent shooting from the floor, and have played strong defense by allowing just 59.9 ppg to opponents.
Stanford showed its dominance on both ends of the court Wednesday as the Cardinal took down California with relative ease. The visiting Cardinal shot 48.1 percent from the floor offensively, and held the Golden Bears to just 35.5 percent shooting in the contest. Chasson Randle scored 25 points to pace Stanford, while Anthony Brown narrowly missed a double-double with 18 points and nine rebounds. Stefan Nastic was on the verge of his own double-double with 13 points and nine boards in the winning effort.
Randle has been stellar for Stanford this season, as he enters Saturday's matchup leading both his team and the Pac-12 Conference in scoring at 19.6 ppg. Randle is at the forefront of an offense for Stanford that is netting 73.1 ppg this season on 44.1 percent shooting from the floor. Brown comes in at second for the Cardinal at 15.2 ppg (adding in a team-best 7.2 rpg), and Nastic is third at 13.9 ppg with a team-high 20 steals. Both Nastic and Reid Travis average 6.9 rpg, coming in right behind Brown's team-leading rebound average. To boost an already strong season statistically, Stanford is holding its opponents to just 63.9 ppg through 16 games played.
Stanford is 8-0 at home this season, and gets to host a UConn team coming off its first loss in four outings. The Cardinal are very strong on the offensive end of the floor, so UConn will have its work cut out for it on the road.
