Tennessee State (2-3) at Saint Peter's (1-4)
GAME NOTES: The Saint Peter's Peacocks shoot for their second straight win on Friday night, as they entertain the Tennessee State Tigers as part of the Barclays Center Classic.
The Peacocks, who began the campaign with four straight defeats, finally responded in a positive way on Tuesday when they crushed Rutgers on the road in a 68-50 final.
As for the Tigers, who are facing Saint Peter's for the first time ever, they are still waiting for their first win over a Division I opponent. The team has taken out Reinhardt and Fisk, both by double figures, but the tougher opponents have gotten the best of TSU. The most recent loss for the Tigers was an ugly 79-36 setback at Virginia earlier in the week.
The effort by Tennessee State against the Cavaliers was nothing short of disappointing as the visitors to Charlottesville made a total of just six field goals in the first half and shot 29.2 percent from the floor for the game. Not a single starter scored in double figures, in fact the five combined to shoot only 3-of-20 from the field. Reserves Marcus Roper and Xavier Richards each tallied 10 points in a futile effort to be relative.
As a rule, points have been hard to come by up until this point as the team averages only 64.2 ppg. But more than just a mere 28.4 percent accuracy behind the 3-point line in five games, TSU is making only 55.9 percent at the free- throw line as well. Richards and Jay Harris are averaging 10.8 ppg apiece and Roper another 10.6 ppg, but the squad has got to get more support all around in order to realize any success this season.
The Peacocks overwhelmed Rutgers the last time out, holding the hosts to just 5-of-24 shooting behind the 3-point line and watching the Scarlet Knights convert a mere 9-of-18 at the free-throw line as well. Saint Peter's managed to offset 17 turnovers by hitting 12-of-23 shots from beyond the arc, thanks to Marvin Dominique who connected on 4-of-6 out on the perimeter as he finished with 22 points. Chazz Patterson was a perfect 3-of-3 on the outside as he tallied 13 points, followed by Trevis Wyche with 12 points.
On a squad that is scoring only 57.0 ppg through five games, Dominique leads the way with 15.8 ppg on the strength of 50.0 percent shooting from the field. Unfortunately, Desi Washington (11.0 ppg) was also supposed to be a key offensive figures for the Peacocks, but he is now out with a hand injury which means someone else will have to fill the void.
The loss of Washington will certainly hurt the Peacocks moving forward, but as long as they can put together strong efforts at the defensive end then opponents like Tennessee State will have to bow down to them.
