Fordham (5-9) at Saint Joseph's (6-8)
GAME NOTES: The Saint Joseph's Hawks will attempt to end a four-game losing streak when they host the Fordham Rams on Wednesday night in Atlantic 10 Conference play at Hagan Arena.
The Rams are also entering this game on a losing streak as they've dropped three straight, the most recent loss being a 76-58 defeat against the Dayton Flyers on Saturday. The losses have dropped Fordham to 0-3 in the A-10, and 5-9 overall.
After going 3-2 in December, the Hawks have yet to find the win column in January as they've been defeated in every game this month, including an 89-74 loss at nationally-ranked Virginia Commonwealth on Saturday. Saint Joseph's now sits at 0-3 in the conference, and 6-8 overall.
This is the 48th time these teams will meet on the hardwood, with the Hawks leading the series 31-16. When they met last Feb. 22, Saint Joseph's came out on top 87-72.
Fordham went an embarrassing 9-of-31 from the field against the Flyers in the opening half on Saturday, and made just 11-of-29 field goal attempts in the final period. Defensively Fordham was torched, as the team allowed Dayton to net 60.5 percent of its field goal tries throughout the game. Fordham was also out-rebounded by the Flyers, 32-26. The Rams' top contributors in the loss were Eric Paschall (20 points, seven rebounds), Chris Sengfelder (17 points), and Antwoine Anderson (10 points).
Paschall has been the leading scorer for Fordham this season with 16.3 ppg (seventh in the A-10) while Ryan Rhoomes has led the team in rebounding with 9.3 rpg (third in the A-10). Offensively, Fordham is producing 64.1 ppg and is connecting on only 40.8 percent of its field goal tries (last in the A-10). On the defensive side of the ball, the Rams have allowed teams to score 68.1 ppg and convert 45.2 percent of their field goal tries (second to last in the A-10). Fordham is also last in the A-10 for turnover margin (-3.14).
Although the Hawks netted 49 percent of their field goal attempts against VCU on Saturday, they allowed the Rams to connect on 42.5 percent of their shot attempts, which included a 52.2 shooting percentage from 3-point distance. Saint Joseph's also didn't help its cause any by turning the ball over 20 times, which led to 18 points for VCU. The Rams' reserves also contributed 30 points. The Hawks were led by DeAndre' Bembry, who netted (16 points, eight rebounds), Aaron Brown (14 points, six rebounds), Isaih Miles (12 points), and James Demery (11 points).
Bembry is leading Saint Joseph's in scoring (16.1 ppg, eighth in the A-10) and rebounding (6.6 rpg) this season. The Hawks currently find themselves ranked second to last in the A-10 for scoring offense (62.4 ppg), field goal percentage (41.1) and free throw percentage (61.7). They are also dead last in the conference for 3-point field goal percentage (27.0). Defensively, the Hawks are allowing 66 ppg and letting teams connect on 43.5 percent of their field goal attempts.
Both squads are desperate to end their losing streaks and get their first conference win this season. In a battle of two teams struggling on offense, look for Fordham's poor turnover margin to lead to a victory for the Hawks.
