Davidson (14-4) at Saint Joseph's (8-11)
GAME NOTES: The Davidson Wildcats go after a third straight win on Saturday when they close out a brief two-game road trip with an Atlantic 10 matchup against the Saint Joseph's Hawks at Hogan Arena.
Davidson had to overcome a six-point deficit to force overtime last Saturday against George Mason before eventually getting past the Patriots, 80-73. Oskar Michelsen scored 20 points to pace the Wildcats, while Tyler Kalinoski added 18 points and eight rebounds and Brian Sullivan finished with 17 points and five assists for Davidson, which improved to 5-2 in conference play and won for the fourth time in its last five games overall.
At 14-4, Davidson is knocking on the door of being ranked nationally and actually received a vote in the latest AP Poll.
The Wildcats did not hit their season average of 81.9 points, but finished with a 27-15 scoring advantage from 3-point range and also outscored the hosts at the charity stripe, 21-14.
Davidson, which leads the A-10 and is near the top of the national ranks in scoring, is shooting an efficient 47.5 percent from the floor overall, and utilizes the 3-pointer as much as any team in the nation, averaging 10.6 treys per game. Scoring depth isn't a problem, as five Wildcats are currently averaging double figures, led by Kalinoski (16.8 ppg), who earned his second A-10 Player of the Week honor this past week, and Jack Gibbs (15.8 ppg), who missed the win over George Mason due to a meniscus injury and is questionable for Saturday's tilt. Peyton Aldridge, Jordan Barham and Sullivan all average just under 11 ppg.
Saint Joseph's, meanwhile, comes in at the other end of the spectrum, having dropped two in a row after a 53-48 setback to LaSalle on Tuesday. DeAndre Bembry led the Hawks with 20 points, seven rebounds and five steals, while Isaiah Miles finished with 10 points and seven boards for Saint Joseph's, which has lost five of seven conference games thus far and is a mere 8-11 on the season.
Unlike the high-scoring Wildcats, the Hawks are scoring just 61.2 ppg on 40.4 percent shooting from the floor, but the team is leaving far too many unrealized points at the free-throw line where they are just 63.2 percent accurate. Defensively, the program is making things interesting by allowing 63.9 ppg, but permitting foes to knock down 43.2 percent of their shots doesn't help.
Needless to say, Bembry is the driving force on offense with his 17.6 ppg, while Aaron Brown comes off the bench to account for another 9.3 ppg. Bembry is also first with 6.5 rpg and leads the team with 2.9 assists.
Davidson may be one of the best teams in the country that nobody knows about. Saint Joseph's will put up a good fight for a while on the defensive front, but the Wildcats have far too much firepower.
This is the first meeting between the schools since Davidson joined the Atlantic 10. Saint Joseph's, though, holds a 7-5 edge in the all-time series, but this is the first meeting since a Davidson win back in 2005.
