ST. JOHN'S RED STORM

St. John's Red Storm

St. John's Red Storm VS. Marquette Golden Eagles

Marquette (10-7) at St. John's (12-5)

GAME NOTES: The Marquette Golden Eagles will try to exorcise their road demons on Wednesday night when they take on St. John's in a Big East Conference matchup at Madison Square Garden.

Marquette is winless on the road this season (0-4), although each of those losses was tightly contested. The Golden Eagles have split their last four games overall and are coming off last Saturday's 62-58 setback at Xavier.

Meanwhile, St. John's has dropped four of its last five outings. The Red Storm traveled to DePaul on Sunday and came away with a 71-67 loss in overtime.

Marquette has won 13 of the last 16 head-to-head meetings and leads the all- time series with St. John's, 15-8. However, the Red Storm swept the regular- season series in 2013-14.

Marquette forced 12 first-half turnovers against Xavier, but the Musketeers eventually managed to overcome an 11-point second-half deficit by knocking down eight 3-pointers after halftime. Still, the Golden Eagles had a chance to take a one-point lead in the final seconds but could not get a layup and follow-up tip to fall. Matt Carlino was sensational in defeat, burying 6-of-9 attempts from the perimeter en route to a game-high 27 points. Duane Wilson joined him in double figures with 12 points.

On the season, Carlino paces the squad in scoring with 18.0 ppg, followed by Wilson with 10.0 ppg. The Golden Eagles have scored exactly as many points (61.2 ppg) as they have given up. But they have stepped up defensively during Big East play, ranking first in the league in scoring defense and third in field goal percentage defense (.404). Marquette has also averaged a league- best 8.6 steals per contest.

St. John's boasts a bit more scoring punch at 71.7 ppg, and the Red Storm have played well on defense by limiting opponents to 38.9 percent shooting from the floor for a +8.2 scoring margin. D'Angelo Harrison ranks among the national scoring leader with 20.0 ppg to go along with 5.9 rebounds. Also averaging in double figures are Rysheed Jordan (13.6 ppg), Phil Greene IV (12.6 ppg) and Sir'Dominic Pointer (11.1 ppg, 6.9 rpg).

Like tonight's opponent, St. John's had trouble defending the three in the second half of its last contest as DePaul shot 6-of-10 from beyond the arc after a 3-of-17 effort in the opening stanza. Conversely, the Red Storm connected on only 2-of-12 3-point attempts for the game. Greene and Jordan shared team-high scoring honors with 17 points apiece in the loss.

Marquette has lost its three league games by an average margin of only 4.3 points, all on the road. The Golden Eagles figure to end that drought before long, but they face another tough road test here against a St. John's squad that held its last foe to 35 percent shooting and forced 22 turnovers.

Predicted Outcome

St. John's 74, Marquette 71
