Saint Joseph's (13-17) vs. St. Bonaventure (17-12)
GAME NOTES: The seventh-seeded St. Bonaventure Bonnies will square off against the 10th-seeded Saint Joseph's Hawks in round two of the Atlantic 10 Tournament Thursday at the Barclay's Center in Brooklyn.
The winner will play second-seeded Dayton on Friday.
The Bonnies ended their regular season winning three straight games, including a 66-52 victory over Fordham on Saturday. The wins bumped St. Bonaventure's A-10 record to 10-8 and overall mark to 17-12.
Saint Joseph's went 2-2 in its final four regular-season games, including a 78-68 loss at Rhode Island on Saturday. The Hawks enter the A-10 tourney with a conference record of 7-11 and overall mark of 13-17.
This marks the 70th time these programs will square off on the hardwood, with Saint Joseph's maintaining a 49-20 series lead. The Bonnies won both meetings between the two teams in the regular season by scores of 70-60 and 70-61.
Saint Joseph's shot an impressive 56.3 percent from the field against Rhode Island but the Hawks only went 8-of-17 from the free-throw line while the Rams were 17-of-21 on foul shot attempts. The Hawks also allowed Rhode Island to convert 47.5 percent of its field-goal tries and Saint Joseph's turned the ball over 16 times which led to 27 points for the Rams. Rhode Island also outscored the Hawks on points in the paint (44-32). DeAndre' Bembry led the Hawks with 21 points, six rebounds and six assists.
Bembry finished the regular season as the A-10's top scorer with 17.9 ppg and led Saint Joseph's in rebounding with 7.8 rpg (seventh in the A-10). The Hawks rank near the bottom in the A-10 for scoring offense (62.1 ppg) and 3-point field goal percentage (.302) and rank last for field-goal percentage (.409) and free-throw percentage (.611). On the defensive side of the ball, the Hawks allow teams to net 64.6 ppg and convert 42.5 percent of their field-goal attempts. The Hawks are in the black for rebounding margin (+0.6) and in the red for turnover margin (-0.33).
The Bonnies converted on 43.4 percent of their field-goal tries against Fordham, and St. Bonaventure held the Rams to a 35.2 shooting percentage including just 5-of-23 from 3-point range. The Bonnies outscored Fordham 17-9 from the free-throw line and tallied more points off of turnovers (18-10) and points in the paint (28-16). Marcus Posley led the Bonnies with 18 points, while Youssou Ndoye finished with a double-double of 15 points and 10 boards.
Posley led St. Bonaventure in scoring this season with 16.5 ppg (seventh in the A-10) while Ndoye was the Bonnies' top rebounder with 10.2 rpg (second in the A-10). St. Bonaventure averages 67.4 ppg and converts 42.2 percent of its field goal attempts. Defensively, the Bonnies allow opponents to score 64.9 ppg and net 42.4 percent of their field-goal tries, but that includes the second lowest 3-point defense in the A-10 (.366). The Bonnies do however rank second in the A-10 for rebounding margin (+3.7) and are in the black for turnover margin (+1.07).
The Bonnies are playing well entering the A-10 tourney as they've won their last three games by double-digits. St. Bonaventure also had the Hawks' number not once, but twice this season, and nothing about the Hawks' play heading into this tourney gives them a big chance to score the upset.
