Recap: Southern Miss vs. South Alabama
Hattiesburg, MS (SportsNetwork.com) - Matt Bingaya scored 14 points and pulled down nine rebounds as the Southern Miss Golden Eagles topped the South Alabama Jaguars, 68-59, in a non-conference clash at Reed Green Coliseum.
Also scoring in double figures for the Golden Eagles (2-0) were Chip Armelin with 13 points, Shadell Millinghaus 11 and Norville Carey with 10 points and six rebounds in 19 minutes off the bench.
Before fouling out, John Brown produced 14 points and five rebounds for the Jaguars (1-1), followed by Barrington Stevens and Taishaun Johnson with 12 and 10 points, respectively.
Both teams struggled from the field in the first half, but as USA converted 12-of-31 (.387), that was still considerably better than the Golden Eagles who made a grand total of just seven baskets, en route to a 29-22 margin at the break.
Southern Miss turned it around in the second half with a strong 53.8 percent effort from the floor and 17-of-24 at the free-throw line, which was more than enough to bring the hosts back and keep them undefeated after two games.
In addition to producing a 44-29 advantage on the glass, USM also outscored the visitors at the charity stripe, 23-8, and limited the Jags to only 5-of-27 shooting on the perimeter.
