Recap: Southern Miss vs. FIU
Hattiesburg, MS (SportsNetwork.com) - Dennis Mavin scored 16 points and pulled down eight rebounds as the FIU Panthers slipped by Southern Miss in overtime, 73-71, in Conference USA play at Reed Green Coliseum.
Also scoring 16 points for FIU (12-12, 5-6 C-USA) was Daviyon Draper, followed by Ray Rodriquez with 14 points off the bench as the Panthers snapped a two- game slide.
The Golden Eagles (6-17, 1-11), losers of five in a row, were led by Chip Armelin with a game-high 24 points, hitting on 6-of-11 shots behind the 3- point line. Before fouling out, Matt Bingaya registered 22 points and seven rebounds, one board behind Armelin.
FIU's largest lead of the first half was just four points, but the team trailed by four at the break, 34-30, after shooting only 37.0 percent from the floor.
The Panthers jumped to 47.6 percent from the field after intermission, but needed a free throw by Dominique Williams with 26 seconds remaining in regulation to push the meeting to overtime tied at 64-64.
In the extra session USM scored the first points on a dunk by Shadell Millinghaus, his only field goal of the night, but from there FIU took over and remained in control the rest of the way, capturing the narrow win on the road.
In a game that featured 10 ties and just as many lead changes, FIU converted an impressive 10-of-20 beyond the arc.
