Seton Hall (8-1) at South Florida (5-4)
GAME NOTES: A loss to Wichita State derailed Seton Hall's perfect record, but the Pirates are back on track and now seek more as they travel to face the South Florida Bulls in a non-conference battle at the Sun Dome.
Seton Hall opened the 2014-15 campaign with seven consecutive wins before the Pirates were defeated, 77-68, by the Shockers. But Seton Hall played against Saint Peter's earlier this week, and took down the Peacocks, 67-52.
South Florida has already endured a rocky start to the season. The Bulls are 5-4 entering the matchup with Seton Hall, and are looking to correct a three- game losing streak that includes a 68-63 defeat against Georgia Southern.
The Pirates and Bulls, both former members of the Big East Conference, have met a grand total of 12 times on the hardwood, and the series has been dominated by Seton Hall. The Pirates own a 10-2 all-time advantage over the Bulls, with a 2-2 road record.
Seton Hall used a strong first half to help bury Saint Peter's and get another win. The Pirates connected on 48.4 percent of their shots in the frame, and took a 39-27 lead into the intermission. Brandon Mobley scored 21 points with seven rebounds to pace the team, while Sterling Gibbs chipped in with 12 points in the win. Angel Delgado pulled down a team-best 12 boards in the win.
Gibbs leads a trio of double-digit scorers this season for Seton Hall. The guard comes into the clash against USF netting 16.9 ppg on 50.5 percent shooting from the field. Isaiah Whitehead contributes 12.9 ppg for the Pirates, while Mobley adds in 10.9 ppg. Delgado has been a force underneath the basket and on the glass, picking up 10.0 rpg and adding in 12 blocked shots. Offense hasn't been an issue for the Pirates, who are scoring 72.4 ppg as a unit on 46.3 percent shooting.
South Florida started the game against Georgia Southern strong, but in the course of the game the Bulls held a lead for only 42 total seconds until the Eagles took back the reins. Chris Perry was impressive, however, notching a double-double of 16 points and 12 rebounds with four blocked shots. Nehemias Morillo wasn't too far off the double-double pace with 11 points and seven boards, while Dinero Mercurius contributed 13 points off the bench. The Bulls shot a respectable 41.8 percent from the floor in the loss.
At times, keeping opponents from scoring has been tough for USF, although the team does allow only 68.4 ppg this season on 39.2 percent shooting from the floor on the year. But the Bulls have shown resilience, netting 69.7 ppg led by Corey Allen Jr.'s 16.1 ppg, which he attains thanks to 54.6 percent shooting. Perry comes in at second on the team netting 13.0 ppg with a team-high 7.0 rpg and 13 blocked shots. Morillo rounds out the double-digit scoring trio with 11.6 ppg, grabbing 6.6 rpg as well.
South Florida has a handful of strong players, and uses its size. But the Pirates will match up very well with that, as they plan to unleash Delgado in the post with Gibbs and Mobley providing help on the perimeter. Though the team is on the road, Seton Hall's potent offense will rise to the occasion.
