South Florida Bulls VS. Hofstra Pride

Hofstra (3-1) at South Florida (3-1)

GAME NOTES: A pair of 3-1 teams clash Tuesday night at the USF Sun Dome as the Hofstra Pride travel to face the South Florida Bulls in a non-conference affair.

Hofstra opened its season with a win over Jacksonville, then dropped a contest to ACC member NC State. The Pride have rebounded with two straight victories, including a 93-71 blowout win over Wagner in the team's latest outing.

South Florida won its first three games of the season, including an overtime contest over UAB late last week. But the Bulls are coming off their first defeat of 2014, when the team dropped a narrow 68-65 contest to NC State in Raleigh.

Hofstra and USF have met only once on the floor before in their series history. The Bulls took that contest in Pittsburgh as part of the University Hoops Classic during the 2001-02 season.

Hofstra was boosted by the clearance of several transfers in the offseason, and the result through the team's first four games has been positive. Against Wagner, transfers Juan'ya Green (24 points, 11 assists) and Ameen Tanksley (17 points, 5-of-5 from 3-point range) were both on point. Brian Bernardi chipped in with 11 points for the Pride, and Jamall Robinson netted 13 points with six boards off the bench. Andre Walker led Hofstra with a team-best 10 rebounds in the lopsided contest.

Hofstra has proven to be an offensive-minded team this season, as the Pride enter this clash with South Florida averaging 79.3 ppg on 46.4 percent shooting from the field. Green leads the squad with a 19.8 ppg average, followed by Tanksley's 14.5 ppg mark. Green also leads the team in passing, dishing out 6.5 assists per outing. His 4.3 rpg mark is behind Rokas Gustys's 6.8 average, Walker's 6.3 mark and Tanksley's 6.0 rpg average. Dion Nesmith is netting 12.5 ppg, and Bernardi chips in 10.8 ppg to round out the double-digit scorers.

USF shot much better than NC State did in the team's three-point loss to the Wolfpack, connecting on 47.3 percent of its field goal tries. NC State shot just 37.3 percent from the floor, but held a 20-9 advantage from the free- throw line. The Bulls were led by Corey Allen Jr.'s 14 points, while Nehemias Morillo came off the bench to score 11 with seven boards, and Chris Perry chipped in 10 points before fouling out. Despite the loss, USF managed to hold an edge in points in the paint (26-16), fast break points (11-5) and bench scoring (25-17).

Perry leads a group of four players averaging double-digit scoring totals for South Florida through four games, netting 16.8 ppg on 51 percent shooting from the floor. His 7.5 rpg mark is also a team high, closely followed by Morillo's 7.0 rpg. Allen comes in at second on the squad with 12.0 ppg, trailed by Morillo's 10.5 ppg and Anthony Collins's 10.3 ppg. As a unit, the Bulls are scoring 71.5 points per outing, and are giving up 66.0 ppg to opponents.

South Florida gets a big boost with the home advantage, as this should be a tough test for both teams. Hofstra hasn't defeated a team of substance yet, so this could be the coming out party for a Pride team that loaded up on new players in the offseason. Still, the Bulls are strong, especially when it comes to playing down low.
