Georgia Southern (4-2) at South Florida (5-3)
GAME NOTES: The Bulls of South Florida try to put an end to a two-game slide on Monday night when they entertains the Georgia Southern Eagles in non- conference action at the Sun Dome.
After opening the 2014-15 campaign with five wins in six chances, the lone defeat coming at NC State by a mere three points, 68-65, the Bulls have dropped consecutive decisions again, both on the road. On Dec. 6, South Florida was in the Motor City taking on Detroit and was turned away by the Titans in a 67-57 final.
As for the Eagles, they recently enjoyed a four-game win streak after opening the season with an 80-71 loss to Illinois on the road. However, a few of the victories during the run came against considerably weaker competition (Trinity College and Johnson University), which is why the 61-59 setback to Central Florida almost two weeks ago was not so much of a surprise.
The Bulls have won all four previous meetings in the series with Georgia Southern, the latest of which was a 66-46 blowout back in 2011.
It may have been a close call against UCF, but the Eagles were doomed to fail due to the fact that they shot not only 37.3 percent from the floor, but also just 4-of-18 behind the 3-point line. Jelani Hewitt scored a team-best 17 points, handed out five assists and made three steals, but he hurt the team as much as he helped, converting a mere 5-of-20 from the floor overall, and 3- of-12 out on the perimeter. Trent Wiedeman accounted for 16 points and four steals, hitting all six of his field goal tries.
On a team that is averaging 77.0 ppg, Hewitt is doing most of the damage on an individual level with his 21.5 ppg, and he accounts for 4.5 apg as well. Hewitt, a 38.2 percent shooter from 3-point range, has made three times as many triples (21) as any one of his teammates, so it is critical that he have the ball in his hands more often than not. Wiedeman accounts for another 14.5 ppg and is second on the unit with 7.0 rpg after six games.
In a game that featured four ties and five lead chances, USF led for just over eight minutes against the Titans on the road at Calihan Hall, but when it counted the most the Bulls came up short, even as Corey Allen Jr. tallied a game-high 26 points and cleared six rebounds. Allen, who shot 4-of-7 behind the 3-point line, supplied all but one of the team's five treys in the meeting. Nehemias Morillo was the only other double-digit scorer for the program with 11 on 5-of-14 shooting from the floor, which included a 1-of-6 showing on the outside.
One of only two players to have started all eight games, Allen is responsible for 17.1 ppg as a 56.8 percent shooter from the floor. Contributing 4.4 rpg as well, Allen is second on the team with 25 assists and 12 steals. Chris Perry and Morillo contribute 12.6 and 11.6 ppg, respectively, while Anthony Collins (8.8 ppg) directs the offense with close to seven assists per outing.
Hewitt may be a scoring machine for the Eagles, but the team needs more than him to get beyond a USF squad that is playing at home and anxious to get back into the win column as well.
