Georgia (14-5) at South Carolina (10-9)
GAME NOTES: Mark Fox takes aim at win No. 100 as head coach at Georgia on Saturday afternoon when his Bulldogs take on the South Carolina Gamecocks in Southeastern Conference play at Colonial Life Arena.
Georgia has been on a roll with wins in five straight and 11 of its last 13 games overall. On Tuesday, the Bulldogs notched a 70-62 win over Vanderbilt for their first season sweep of the Commodores in 14 years. Three of their next four games will be played on opponents' hardwoods.
South Carolina has veered in the opposite direction, as the team enters this tilt hoping to avoid a fifth consecutive defeat. The Gamecocks were on the wrong end of a 64-58 final at LSU on Wednesday night. That game featured seven ties and 16 lead changes, but the Tigers pulled away late with a 7-0 run to close out the contest.
Georgia owns a 54-48 series lead and has won eight of the last nine meetings with the Gamecocks.
The Bulldogs shot 9-of-17 (.529) from beyond the arc and 23-of-25 (.920) from the foul line against Vandy earlier this week. It marked the team's best free- throw shooting percentage in a game since going 24-of-26 against Vermont in last season's NIT. Georgia has now shot 50 percent or better from 3-point range in three of its last four games. The Bulldogs did commit 16 turnovers, but they were solid defensively and held the Commodores to 36.2-percent shooting from the floor.
Nemanja Djurisic paced four double-figure scorers for UGA with 15 points to go along with a team-high nine rebounds. J.J. Frazier, the reigning SEC Player of the Week thanks to last Saturday's 37-point effort at Mississippi State behind a perfect 7-of-7 shooting from the perimeter, finished with 12 points and seven boards. Last Saturday at Mississippi State, Frazier shot a perfect 7- of-7 from the perimeter and scored 37 points, the most by a Bulldogs player since career scoring leader Litterial Green scored 38 at UCLA on Jan. 4, 1992.
Wednesday's matchup between Carolina and LSU was tight throughout, as neither team led by more than six at any point. The Gamecocks were up for much of the second half, including a 58-57 lead with 1:40 to play. However, they missed their next four shots from the field and did not score again the rest of the way. The Gamecocks held a huge 19-7 advantage on the offensive glass, but they shot just 34.4 percent for the game and committed 15 turnovers. Duane Notice scored a team-high 12 points, although he shot just 5-of-18 and had as many turnovers as assists (3).
On the season, Notice paces the squad with 11.4 ppg, while Sindarius Thornwell (11.2 ppg, 5.6 rpg) and Tyrone Johnson (10.1 ppg) are also averaging double figures. Those three have been in the starting lineup together for every game this season. Despite their recent struggles, the Gamecocks are +7.4 in scoring margin and are +6.8 on the boards.
UGA began the week with an RPI of 24, third-best among all SEC teams. The Bulldogs are beginning to garner votes in the Top-25, and for good reason. A third straight road victory here could earn them that coveted national ranking.
