East Carolina (8-9) at SMU (13-4)
GAME NOTES: The surging SMU Mustangs take aim at their fourth straight victory when they tangle with the East Carolina Pirates in American Athletic Conference action from Moody Coliseum on Saturday afternoon.
SMU has won 11 of its last 12 games, including rallying for a 60-55 triumph at Temple on Wednesday.
The Pirates snapped a three-game skid with a 66-61 home win over Houston on the same night.
SMU is 5-4 in the series with East Carolina, but the teams haven't met since the 2012-13 season when each called Conference USA home.
The Mustangs will play one day after reports surfaced that the school received a Notice of Allegations from the NCAA. It's reportedly for potential improprieties in the men's basketball program, this according to the Dallas Morning News. The newspaper reported there were as many as 11 potential infractions involving the grades of sophomore guard Keith Frazier, who has started 16 of SMU's 17 games. The newspaper reported Frazier, who is averaging 10.5 ppg, third-best on the team, is academically ineligible pending a late appeal.
On Wednesday, Markus Kennedy collected 21 points and pulled down seven rebounds in the win over Temple. Nic Moore and Ryan Manuel each chipped in with 10 points. Moore grabbed five rebounds and dished out five assists, but also turned the ball over seven times. SMU held a distinct advantage in points in the paint, 32-16. The Mustangs rallied from a 13-point deficit in the second half.
Moore (14.3 ppg) leads the Mustangs offense. Yanick Moreira (11.9 ppg, 6.5 rpg) and Kennedy (10.0 ppg, 4.9 rpg) are also big contributors for Larry Brown's team, which is averaging 69.5 ppg and allowing only 60 ppg. Moore has been prolific from long distance as evidenced by his 44.7 percent 3-point shooting. Moreira is shooting 61.1 percent from the field overall.
B.J. Tyson finished with 16 points and seven rebounds in East Carolina's win over Houston. Caleb White contributed 14 points and Terry Whisnant added 13 more. The Pirates' bench outscored Houston's reserves, 29-11.
Tyson (13.5 ppg), Whisnant (12.8 ppg) and White (12.6 ppg) are the scoring leaders for the Pirates, who average 67.3 ppg. They are shooting 32.1 percent from 3-point range with Whisnant and White leading the way with 68 combined treys. East Carolina has dropped all five of its road games this season. It's last such triumph was Feb. 1, 2014 against UAB.
SMU is 10-1 at home this season and has won 28 of the last 30 home games. Even with the loss of Frazier, the Mustangs are still better than the Pirates.
