Manhattan (20-6) at Siena (11-16)
GAME NOTES: The Manhattan Jaspers will seek to extend a six-game win streak and make a move toward Iona and the top spot in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference when they travel to face the Siena Saints in a conference bout at the Times Union Center.
Manhattan has won six consecutive games, but trails Iona by a game and a half in the MAAC standings with a 13-4 conference record. The Jaspers defeated Monmouth, 75-61, Wednesday in the team's most recent outing.
Siena has lost two games in a row and four of its last five altogether. The Saints have slipped in MAAC play to a 7-9 conference record - seven games back of Iona for the top spot. The Saints dropped a heartbreaking 92-88 triple- overtime contest to Canisius Sunday.
Manhattan leads the all-time series with Siena, 49-39, which was extended earlier this season when the Jaspers defeated the Saints, 90-68.
Manhattan jumped ahead of Monmouth early and led by 10 points at the end of the first half, 41-31. The Jaspers were able to cruise in the second half, adding four more points to their lead for the 14-point victory. George Beamon scored a game-high 31 points in the win, netting 10-of-19 from the floor. Rhamel Brown and Emmy Andujar each tallied 12 points for Manhattan, while Brown pulled down a team-best eight rebounds. The Jaspers hit 51.9 percent from the field in the game.
Beamon has been one of the stronger players this season in the MAAC, and the top scorer for Manhattan this season. Beamon is scoring an even 20 ppg on 42.2 percent shooting from the floor, adding a team-high 6.7 rpg mark to his stat line. Michael Alvarado trails Beamon in scoring this season, netting 12.8 ppg with a team-best 115 assists and 38 steals. Brown (9.6 ppg) leads the team in blocked shots with 97.
Siena nearly took down conference power Canisius on Sunday, but had multiple opportunities thwarted in the triple-overtime contest. Billy Baron played all 55 minutes for the Golden Griffins in the contest and scored 40 points, leading his team over Siena. Rob Poole led the Saints with 33 points on 11- of-18 shooting, while Brett Bisping contributed 16 in the loss. Ryan Oliver chipped in 12 points, and Marquis Wright notched a double-double with 10 points and 11 assists.
Poole, with the 33-point effort, improved his already team-leading scoring average to 15.3 ppg on 42.6 percent shooting from the floor. He's second on the squad with a 5.5 rpg average, and in steals with 27 on the year. Bisping checks in at 10.2 ppg, and adds his team-leading 6 rpg. Wright tops the Saints with 150 assists on the year and 45 steals.
Siena was able to play Canisius very tough, but Manhattan is a different type of team with multiple outlets capable of scoring a handful of points. The Jaspers are also very good on the road with a 12-3 record away from home, so being at the Times Union center doesn't necessarily give Siena a distinct advantage.
