Marquette (10-12) at Seton Hall (15-7)
GAME NOTES: The Seton Hall Pirates go for the season sweep of the Marquette Golden Eagles on Saturday afternoon when the two teams meet up for a Big East Conference tilt inside the Prudential Center.
These teams faced each other last Wednesday in Milwaukee, where Seton Hall emerged an 80-70 road winner. SHU had all five starters score in double figures in that one, although Marquette still leads the all-time series, 13-3.
However, Marquette enters Saturday's rematch in the midst of a season-long, six-game losing streak. The Golden Eagles traveled to No. 7 Villanova on Wednesday night and were simply outmatched in a 70-52 setback. They remain winless in true road games through six tries this season.
Seton Hall is also looking to rebound from a 75-62 loss at DePaul on Tuesday. That marked the team's fourth loss in the past six games since an overtime victory against nationally-ranked Villanova to kick off the New Year. The Pirates, who have won nine of 11 at home this season, will stay in Newark to take on Georgetown this coming Tuesday.
The Golden Eagles were no match for Villanova earlier this week as they shot just 35 percent from the floor, including a 7-of-30 effort in the first half, and committed 17 turnovers. The Wildcats, on the other hand, were 11-of-26 from beyond the arc (.423). Sophomore Jajuan Johnson was the only double-digit scorer for Marquette, finishing with 10 points in 22 minutes off the bench.
The Golden Eagles' leading scorer, Matt Carlino (14.5 ppg), shot just 3-of-10 from the field and finished with nine points and four turnovers. Carlino is fifth in the conference in scoring during Big Ten play (17.3 ppg) and leads the conference in 3-pointers made. Along with Carlino, Duane Wilson (11.8 ppg) and Luke Fischer (10.2 ppg, 5.0 rpg) are also averaging double figures while Juan Anderson (9.7 ppg, 6.4 rpg) is right on the cusp. Wilson, a redshirt freshman, is the top scoring rookie in the Big Ten.
Seton Hall is led by sniper Sterling Gibbs, who is shooting at an impressive 45-percent clip from the perimeter (57-of-126) and is averaging 17.1 ppg. Isaiah Whitehead (12.6 ppg, 4.1 rpg), Brandon Mobley (10.0 ppg, 5.7 rpg) and Angel Delgado (9.2 ppg, 9.3 rpg) have also made steady contributions. The Pirates have been one of the nation's stingiest defensive teams along the perimeter, where they have held foes to 25.9-percent shooting on the season.
On Tuesday, they held DePaul to 5-of-21 shooting from 3-point range, although the Blue Demons were 65.8 percent on their two-point attempts. Seton Hall converted 23-of-26 free throws but shot just 36 percent from the floor and was outrebounded by 10. Gibbs led all scorers with 21 points -- his seventh game with 20 or more points during Big East play -- and Whitehead scored 14 off the bench, albeit behind 3-of-10 shooting from the field.
SHU was 50 percent from the floor and from beyond the arc in the first head-to-head meeting, which was the Pirates' first-ever win in Milwaukee. Given the direction both these teams have been heading over the past few weeks, the Pirates should be able to win the rematch on their home floor.
