SAN JOSE ST. SPARTANS

San Jose St. Spartans

San Jose St. Spartans VS. Santa Clara Broncos

Santa Clara (3-4) at San Jose State (1-7)

GAME NOTES: Seeking just their second win of the season, the San Jose State Spartans settle in at The Event Center as they host the Santa Clara Broncos in non-conference action on Saturday night.

The Spartans, who won their season opener against Bethesda by a score of 67-44, have not tasted victory since. The team is now dealing with a seven- game slide after crashing at UC Davis earlier this week in a 70-56 final. In the last four outings, SJSU has scored no more than 60 points.

As for the Broncos, a team which has yet to win a true road game in 2014-15, the squad managed to snap a four-game slide last weekend with a 68-60 triumph over Rider in Orlando during early-season tournament play.

These familiar foes are meeting for the 105th time, with the Broncos leading the series by a 75-29 margin, winning 22 of the last 32 meetings since 1980. Santa Clara has won four straight over the Spartans, including an 89-77 decision last season.

Jared Brownridge led the way for the Broncos during their last game in the state of Florida on Sunday, posting 27 points on an impressive 6-of-11 showing behind the 3-point line, while Brandon Clark tacked on another 23 points and handed out six of his team's 13 assists as the unit shot 50.0 percent from the field. Matt Hubbard pitched in with 10 points, but the lone forward in the starting lineup managed to come away with just two rebounds.

Now through seven games, Clark is putting up a team-best 18.3 ppg, although his accuracy from the field (.390) is still a bit lacking. Clark does make up for some of his shooting shortcomings by handing out a team-high 30 assists, against only 12 turnovers. Brownridge produces another 13.4 ppg, thanks in large part to his 19-of-44 shooting behind the 3-point line where the team is hitting about 37 percent of their chances.

San Jose State shot a solid 50.0 percent from the field in the second half against the Aggies in the last outing, but that was only after the team converted a total of just eight field goals in the first half, en route to a double-digit deficit at the break. The Spartans ended up hitting just 5-of-21 beyond the arc and 7-of-12 at the free-throw line in the 14-point setback.

Not a single starter scored in double figures for the Spartans, instead it was Rashad Muhammad off the bench who tallied 20 points to at least give the visitors a sliver of hope.

Muhammad, the leading scorer for the Spartans in four of the first eight games, is currently responsible for 10.5 ppg, second only to Jordan Baker who is just fractions of a point ahead on that list with his 10.9 ppg. But more than just a decent scorer, he is shooting just 35.4 percent from the field, Baker is also first with 27 assists as he tries desperately to get his teammates involved in the action.

Until the Spartans prove otherwise, the losses will continue to pile up both on the road and at home. The team is scoring less than 59 ppg and has trouble finding the basket more often than not, creating a perfect scenario for a Santa Clara win.
