Sam Houston St. Bearkats VS. Wofford Terriers

Wofford (3-1) vs. Sam Houston State (3-1)

GAME NOTES: The Wofford Terriers and Sam Houston State Bearkats will conclude their play in the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic at Fairfield, as the two teams take the court on Sunday afternoon at Webster Bank Arena.

Wofford dropped its second opener against a very good Stanford team on Nov. 14, 74-59, but haven't lost since, stringing together three straight victories, including wins over Fairfield (54-36) and South Dakota (72-68) in this event.

The Bearkats are also an impressive 3-1 on the year. The lone loss on the season was a two-point decision at UNLV (59-47), but the team has won both outings in this event, topping South Dakota in a triple-overtime thriller (93-85) followed by Saturday's 74-60 win over host Fairfield.

Senior Karl Cochran put on quite the show on Saturday, as he erupted for a career-high 31 points, leading the Terriers to the four-point win over South Dakota. Cochran, the Southern Conference Preseason Player of the Year, hit eight 3-pointers in the victory, and was joined in double figures by Justin Gordon, who finished with 12 points. Wofford shot 48.3 percent from the floor overall, a number that was aided by its 55 percent effort from behind the arc (11-of-20).

While not the most explosive team around at a modest 67.8 points per game, Wofford does make the most of its trips up and down the floor, converting an efficient .479 from the field. The 3-pointer is an important weapon in the arsenal, with the Terriers connecting on over 45 percent of their long-range attempts and averaging 7.8 treys per outing. Cochran has certainly lived up to his billing in the early going, averaging 18.0 ppg, while also finding time to rebound (6.3 rpg) and distribute (4.0 apg). Gordon adds 10.8 ppg to the cause, mostly coming off the bench. Spencer Collins and Lee Skinner chime in with 9.0 ppg apiece.

The Bearkats held a slim two-point lead at the break against the host Stags on Saturday, but blew the game wide open in the second frame, shooting a scorching .650 from the floor over the final 20 minutes to keep Fairfield at arm's length. Raheem Ransom led the way for Sam Houston State with 18 points, going 5-of-7 from the floor (4-of-5 from 3-point range) and a perfect 4-of-4 from the free-throw line. Demarcus Gatlin came off the bench to add 14 points to the cause.

Gatlin may not start, but he currently leads the team in scoring, coming off the bench with 12.3 ppg. Ransom is a close second at 12.0 ppg. Michael Holyfield and Dakari Henderson are just under double digits, with 9.5 and 9.0 ppg, respectively. Holyfield tops the squad in rebounding with 8.0 rpg.

These two teams are both off to fast starts this season. The Terriers may have the slight edge here, as Cochran is on fire right now. If his play continues, Wofford will continue to win.
