Northern Arizona (20-14) at Sacramento State (21-11)
GAME NOTES: Saturday's slate of second-round matchups in the CollegeInsider.com Tournament wraps up in California, as the Sacramento State Hornets host the Northern Arizona Lumberjacks at the Hornets Nest.
The winner moves on to the third round of the postseason tournament, and will await its next opponent.
Northern Arizona took care of Grand Canyon in the first round of the CIT on Wednesday with a 75-70 victory over the Antelopes. It was an important win for the Jacks, who were coming off a heartbreaking two-point loss to Montana in the Big Sky Tournament semifinals.
The Hornets, another Big Sky program, bowed out of the conference tournament with a 91-83 loss to eventual league champion Eastern Washington. In Sacramento State's first-ever Division I postseason contest Wednesday, the team defeated Portland, 73-66, to advance to the second round of the CIT.
Northern Arizona and Sacramento State clashed twice during the regular season, with each program winning on its home floor. The all-time series between the two Big Sky rivals, which dates back to 1991, belongs to NAU. The Lumberjacks own a 34-12 advantage over the Hornets in head-to-head clashes.
Northern Arizona had to battle back from a deficit in Wednesday's win over Grand Canyon. The Antelopes held a 40-36 edge over the Jacks at halftime, which was down from their eight-point advantage midway through the opening period. But a strong second-half effort defensively for NAU, which limited Grand Canyon to 34.2 percent shooting with a 1-of-12 mark from 3-point distance, helped the Lumberjacks pull ahead. Aaseem Dixon collected 21 points to pace NAU, while Quinton Upshur chipped in 19 points, Kris Yanku added 10 with seven rebounds and seven assists, and Jordyn Martin tallied a double- double with 10 points and 14 boards.
Upshur heads into the second-round matchup leading the Lumberjacks in scoring, averaging 14.4 ppg on 38.7 percent shooting. He's trailed closely by Yanku, who chips in 13.9 ppg, and Dixon, netting 13.0 ppg. Martin leads the squad on the glass this season, averaging 7.3 rpg. Yanku has proven to be a viable floor manager for the Lumberjacks, owning a 5.1 apg average with 1.2 spg. NAU's offense nets 68.3 ppg, but defensively the team surrenders 67.0 ppg to opponents.
In its first-ever Division I postseason contest, Sacramento State picked up its first-ever tournament win. The Hornets netted an impressive 52 percent of their shots against Portland, adding in 7-of-14 from beyond the arc. Dylan Garrity scored 17 points to lead Sacramento State, while Mikh McKinney contributed 16 points to the cause. Nick Hornsby came off the bench to add 10 points in the winning effort, and Cody Demps brought down a team-high seven rebounds. The Hornets held the Pilots to 42.6 percent shooting in the contest.
McKinney was one of the better scorers in the Big Sky Conference this season, and he'll look to continue that success for the third time against the Lumberjacks on Saturday. McKinney heads into the weekend averaging 19.2 ppg on 51.6 percent shooting from the floor, adding in a 44.7 percent touch from 3- point range. His 4.9 apg mark is also the best on the squad. Garrity contributes 13.8 ppg for the Hornets, and Demps is just off the double-digit scoring pace with 9.6 ppg for an offense that is tallying 70.9 ppg on 48.7 percent shooting. The team's defense could certainly be better, allowing 67.9 ppg to opponents.
The Lumberjacks couldn't get the job done earlier this season when they played in Sacramento (78-73 loss on Jan. 1), but they come into this clash having won four of their last five games. For Sacramento State, the momentum of its first-ever playoff win could carry the team once again past NAU.
