Vanderbilt (4-0) vs. Rutgers (2-2)
GAME NOTES: The Barclays Center opens its doors once again to college basketball as the Vanderbilt Commodores take on the Rutgers Scarlet Knights in a non-conference clash as part of the Barclays Center Classic.
Vanderbilt is off to a hot start this season, earning a 4-0 record through the team's first four games played. The Commodores defeated Trevecca Nazarene and Lipscomb to open the season, and then took down Tennessee State (78-46) and Norfolk State (63-53) in the most recent outings.
Rutgers heads to Brooklyn to take on Vanderbilt sporting a 2-2 record this season. The Scarlet Knights lost to George Washington in the season opener, but then won back-to-back games against Fairleigh Dickinson and Saint Francis- Brooklyn. Rutgers' most recent contest was a 68-50 loss to Saint Peter's.
Surprisingly, these two teams have never met on the basketball floor despite their rich histories.
Vanderbilt came out in its last outing against Norfolk State with the intention of remaining unbeaten, and the team made sure that wouldn't be an issue in the first half. The Commodores went into halftime with a 38-23 lead after shooting 63.2 percent from the floor in the period. Wade Baldwin IV led Vanderbilt with 13 points, and added six rebounds and six assists to his resume. Riley LaChance chipped in with 12 points, and Matthew Fisher-Davis and James Siakam each tallied 11 points in the win. The Commodores also held up defensively, holding the Spartans to 32.1 percent shooting in the game.
Damian Jones had just six points against Norfolk State, but he still leads the Commodores in scoring entering this clash with Rutgers, averaging 16.0 ppg with a team-high 8.3 rpg and 11 blocked shots. Luke Kornet is the next highest Vanderbilt scorer, coming in at 12.5 ppg, followed by LaChance at 11.8 ppg. Baldwin rounds out the group of four double-digit scorers on the squad netting 10.3 ppg, adding in a team-best 6.0 apg. The Commodores are nearly outscoring their competition by 20 points on average, netting 74.0 ppg and holding opponents to 54.2 ppg.
Rutgers got a bit of a surprise when it took on Saint Peter's in the team's most recent outing. The Scarlet Knights allowed the Peacocks to net 43.5 percent of their shot tries from the floor, while Rutgers could only make 37.5 percent of its field goal attempts. Junior Etou netted 16 points to lead the team, while Myles Mack chipped in 13 with seven assists (and also seven turnovers), and Kadeem Jack contributed 10 points in the 69-50 rout.
