Manhattan (2-5) vs. Rutgers (5-4)
GAME NOTES: Having finally put a stop to a three-game losing streak, the Manhattan Jaspers will attempt to string a pair of wins together as they take on the Rutgers Scarlet Knights in a non-conference battle at Madison Square Garden.
Rutgers could very easily be on a two-game losing streak of its own had the Scarlet Knights not battled back to defeat New Hampshire at home in their last outing, 60-56. Rutgers has won two of its last three games, and sports a 5-4 record on the season.
Manhattan, last season's Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference champion that gave Louisville a run for its money in the second round of the NCAA Tournament, has struggled to a 2-5 record this season. The Jaspers ended a three-game losing streak with a 60-38 victory over Marist last Sunday.
These two teams have met 31 previous times, with Rutgers owning the 17-14 all- time lead. The last neutral site meeting between the programs occurred back in 1992, when they clashed at MSG as well. The Knights came away with an 80-76 victory in that contest.
Manhattan really put the pressure on Marist defensively in the Jaspers' latest outing. The Red Foxes shot just 21.7 percent from the floor in the first half, and then came out and dipped to 16.7 percent shooting in the second frame. Manhattan was led in scoring by Emmy Andujar, who recorded a double-double of 15 points and 15 rebounds with eight assists. Rich Williams also tallied 13 points for a Manhattan team that connected on 44.1 percent of its tries from the field.
After losing several of its top scorers from last season, Manhattan has had to look elsewhere for scoring in 2014-15. Shane Richards leads the team with 13.1 ppg, followed by Andujar's 11.3 ppg mark. Andujar leads the team entering the clash with Rutgers in rebounding, bringing down 8.1 boards per outing. Ashton Pankey rounds out the trio of double-digit scorers this season for the Jaspers, netting 11.0 ppg. As a unit, Manhattan is scoring 62.9 ppg, while opponents are averaging 65.0 ppg.
Rutgers struggled for much of the first half to put New Hampshire away, as the Scarlet Knights went into the intermission owning a 38-32 lead. But the Wildcats battled back to take a slim lead in the second period, though they couldn't hang on down the stretch. Myles Mack carried his Knights, netting 20 points with seven rebounds in 37 minutes of play. Kadeem Jack nearly tallied a double-double with eight points and 10 rebounds in the win, though the forward turned the ball over seven times.
The 5-foot-10 Mack is the spark-plug for Rutgers basketball, and it's been that way for several seasons now. Mack leads the team in scoring entering this game with Manhattan, averaging 14.8 ppg. He also serves as the team's point guard, and has dished out 40 assists with an incredible 26 steals to top the squad. His 4.7 rpg mark is ranked fourth on Rutgers this season. Jack comes in at 11.4 ppg this season for a team netting just 57.4 ppg on 37.3 percent shooting. The Knights give up an average of 62.9 ppg to opponents.
Rutgers picked up a win on Tuesday night to push the team to record above .500, though the Scarlet Knights have had some trouble with better competition this season. Fortunately for the Knights, their schedule is pretty light leading up to Big Ten Conference play, so expect a few more wins for Rutgers in the coming weeks.
