ULM (2-2) vs. Robert Morris (1-4)
GAME NOTES: The first-ever meeting between the ULM Warhawks and the Colonials of Robert Morris takes place on Thanksgiving as part of the Battle 4 Atlantis on the Mainland event at McKenzie Arena.
Robert Morris is seeking to end a two-game slide and pick up just its second victory of the season when it hits the floor on Thursday. On Wednesday, the team was thwarted by host Chattanooga in a 61-46 final, marking its fourth defeat in five tries to start the campaign.
As for the Warhawks, they began the season with back-to-back victories, but are now .500 after four games due to a 61-48 defeat at the hands of Coastal Carolina yesterday.
ULM dug itself a big hole in the first half against Coastal, converting just eight field goals, including 2-of-11 behind the 3-point line, which left the Warhawks with a double-digit deficit at the break. The second half saw the squad make only 3-of-14 out on the perimeter and miss both chances at the free-throw line in the 13-point loss. Majok Deng managed to squeeze out a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds, adding three blocked shots, while Justin Roberson produced 11 points and seven boards and Jamaal Samuel four rejections off the bench.
He failed to score in double figures on Wednesday, but Tylor Ongwae is still the leading scorer for ULM with his 15.0 ppg, stemming from his 52.9 percent shooting from the field. Roberson adds another 10.0 ppg to the offensive attack which is generating 71.0 ppg. Defensively, the Warhawks are clamping down on the competition, allowing only 56.5 ppg on 35.2 percent shooting from the floor overall and 27.7 percent beyond the arc.
If the Warhawks thought they had some trouble finding the basket on Wednesday, they'll be glad to know that they were not alone. Robert Morris players made just 27.8 percent of their first goal tries, including 3-of-15 behind the 3- point line, as they took a tumble against Chattanooga. With only 46 points, it makes sense that there was just a single player in double figures as Lucky Jones tallied 11 on 4-of-11 shooting. Unfortunately, the other four starters combined to make only 4-of-19 from the field.
Jones, one of only three players to have started all five games for the Colonials, is also one of three to be scoring in double figures at the moment with his 11.4 ppg. Ahead of him on that list is Rodney Pryor (13.0 ppg), a 44.8 percent shooter from behind the 3-point line who has been in the starting lineup only once.
Both of these teams need to dial up the offense today, although a low-scoring affair might not be a bad idea either. Expect ULM to bounce back a bit more favorably than RMU and conclude this tournament on a positive note.
