St. Bonaventure (8-5) at Richmond (8-7)
GAME NOTES: Seeking their eighth home win of the season, the Richmond Spiders settle into the Robins Center on Sunday afternoon against fellow Atlantic 10 Conference foe, the Bonnies of St. Bonaventure.
The Spiders, who have lost a pair of home dates by a combined three points versus Wake Forest and Northeastern to close out the 2014 portion of the schedule, are shooting for a second straight win overall. The team was in action on Thursday night hosting George Mason and turned away the Patriots in a 75-65 decision.
For the Bonnies, they've hit a bit of a rough patch in the schedule, losing three of the last four, although they are 1-1 in conference play thanks to a 69-55 triumph over UMass on the road last weekend. Thursday night saw the squad take a step backwards however, falling to Dayton at home by a 78-61 score.
Richmond leads the all-time series by a 14-5 margin, with the most recent meeting being a narrow 64-62 triumph for the Spiders last season. The Bonnies also won a meeting last season, 84-70.
Against Dayton, the Bonnies shot an impressive 55.0 percent from the field in the first half, yet trailed by eight at the break and then dropped to 32.1 percent in the second half. The hosts also knocked down just 3-of-14 shots behind the 3-point line in the meeting, preventing them from making a serious push for the win. Marcus Posley tallied 17 points for St. Bonaventure, followed by Dion Wright and Andell Cumberbatch with 13 and 10 points, respectively. Youssou Ndoye responded with eight points, nine boards and three blocked shots.
Accounting for 35 of his team's 78 made 3-pointers, Posley leads the Bonnies in scoring with 17.5 ppg, one of five players in double figures for a program that is generating 70.8 ppg. Wright picks up with 12.9 ppg and 7.9 rpg, followed by Jaylen Adams with 11.5 ppg stemming from his 26-of-65 shooting beyond the arc. An enforcer in the paint, the Bonnies are getting significant contributions from Ndoye with his 10.7 ppg, team-best 11.3 rpg and 36 blocked shots.
Richmond trailed by four points during one stage in the first half, but after 20 minutes of action the Spiders found themselves with a sizeable 42-23 edge thanks to a sizzling 68.0 percent accuracy from the field, including 6-of-9 behind the 3-point line. The host dropped off to only 38.9 percent from the floor after the intermission, but easily secured the double-digit win with 18- of-20 shooting at the free-throw line.
Richmond was led by Terry Allen and his 20 points, followed by Kendall Anthony with 19. TJ Cline pitched in with 14 points on 5-of-7 shooting from the floor, followed by ShawnDre' Jones with 13 points off the bench.
Anthony, who joins Trey Davis as the only players to have started every game, is listed as the top scorer with his 15.7 ppg. Allen checks in with another 11.3 ppg, shooting an impressive 51.2 percent from the field but a mere 8- of-27 (.296) out on the perimeter. As a group, the Spiders are producing 62.7 ppg, which is slightly better than the 60.1 ppg being generated by competitors who are beating Richmond on the glass by almost six rebounds per contest.
As long as the Richmond defense can step up to the challenge this weekend, the Spiders have a great shot at claiming their ninth win of the campaign.
