Duquesne (6-12) at Richmond (10-9)
GAME NOTES: The Richmond Spiders hope their dominance over the Duquesne Dukes over the past decade or so continues when the two Atlantic 10 Conference programs meet at Robins Center on Wednesday night.
Richmond is 16-1 against Duquesne since joining the A-10 in 2001, the lone blemish coming in 2012. The Dukes had won the first eight meetings prior to this recent stretch.
The Spiders nearly pulled off a win over a ranked opponent last Saturday, but wound up on the losing end of a 53-60 decision at No. 22 Dayton.
Richmond was able to overcome a 37-27 halftime deficit to hold a slim lead with three minutes left, but could not hold it down the stretch en route to a 10th consecutive road defeat.
T.J. Cline netted 10 of his 14 points in the second half for the Spiders, with Terry Allen, ShawnDre' Jones and Alonzo Nelson-Ododa each finishing with 11 points in the loss, which dropped them to 3-3 in conference play.
The Spiders are in the bottom half of the Atlantic 10 rankings in terms of scoring offense, averaging 64.2 ppg this season. Richmond is led on offense by Kendall Anthony, who nets 15.9 ppg this season but was held to just nine points against Dayton. Allen chips in with 11.8 ppg, and Cline rounds out the trio of double-digit scorers at 11.5 ppg.
The team's defense has been relatively stellar this season, holding opponents to just 60.1 ppg, which ranks fourth in the A-10 defensively.
The Dukes have dropped five straight since their lone conference win against Saint Joseph's earlier this month. They were never in it against George Washington last Saturday, trailing 40-18 at halftime en route to a 74-59 setback.
Derrick Colter led Duquesne with 12 points, while Micah Mason and L.G. Gill each finished with eight points apiece. There was a 36-15 difference in 3- point scoring in George Washington's favor.
Duquesne's starting backcourt of Colter (12.7 ppg) and Mason (10.8 ppg) is shooting a combined 46.9 percent from 3-point range. Jordan Stevens (9.5 ppg) and TySean Powell (8.6 ppg) are part of a balanced attack that is averaging 71.7 ppg, which is third-best in the conference.
While the Dukes' 1-6 record in A-10 play is abysmal, three of their losses have been decided by three points or fewer. Their scoring defense, however, ranks last in the conference at 72.6 ppg.
The Spiders have won three in a row at home and are 9-2 in the Robins Center this season. They went toe-to-toe against a NCAA Tournament-ready team in Dayton on the road and are primed to hand Duquesne a sixth straight loss.
