Davidson (12-3) at Richmond (9-8)
GAME NOTES: The Davidson Wildcats will try to complete their first regular season series sweep as a member of the Atlantic 10 Conference when they visit the Robins Center to square off with the Richmond Spiders on Saturday.
The Wildcats began their A-10 era on Jan. 3 with an 81-67 home win over the Spiders before falling to VCU, 71-65, on the road. Davidson has been impressive since, defeating Saint Louis (89-54) and Massachusetts (71-63) to put itself in a tie for third place in the conference standings with George Washington and Rhode Island. Coach Bob McKillop's squad has been successful this season due to its tremendous offensive performance. The Wildcats are ranked fourth nationally in points per game (83.7) and lead the A-10 in both field-goal percentage (.478) and free-throw percentage (.743).
Richmond is coming off of a heartbreaking, 73-70, double-overtime loss to George Washington in the nation's capital. The loss snapped a two-game winning streak and dropped coach Chris Mooney's Spiders one game behind the Wildcats in the A-10 race. The Spiders are tied for third with the Colonials on the A-10 leaderboard in scoring defense (59.8 ppg), but also rank 12th in the conference in points per game with 62.9. Richmond also has the second-best turnover margin in the league (+2.76) behind only VCU.
Davidson leads the all-time series between these schools, which began in the 1939-40 campaign, 31-12.
Despite the win, the Wildcats were held well under their scoring average by the Minutemen their last time out. Tyler Kalinoski and Brian Sullivan tied for the team-lead with 14 points apiece, while Peyton Aldridge and Jack Gibbs joined them in double figures with 13 points each. Davidson showed it is anything but shy from 3-point range, finishing 7-of-29 from beyond the arc. Gibbs and Kalinoski, who rank fifth and seventh among A-10 scoring leaders, continue to pace five Wildcats in double figures, averaging 16.3 and 16.2 ppg, respectively. Gibbs is also pacing the conference in assists (4.9 apg) and Kalinoski is tied for third with 4.1 per tilt.
Kendall Anthony paced Richmond in its hard-fought loss to GW on Thursday with 20 points, although he shot just 6-of-19 from the floor. Starting forwards T.J. Cline and Terry Allen combined for 30 points and 12 rebounds, while rookie guard ShawnDre' Jones provided a spark off the bench with 11 points. Richmond, which ranks last in the conference in rebounding margin (-6.4 rpg), was once again dominated on the glass. GW finished with a 43-24 advantage in total boards, which erased the significance of the Spiders' stingy perimeter defense that limited the Colonials to a 3-of-15 clip from beyond the arc. Anthony is averaging a team-best 15.8 ppg. Terry Allen (11.3 ppg) and Cline (10.3 ppg) have also been significant in the Spiders' attack.
Davidson has yet to lose to an unranked opponent this season. The transition from the Southern Conference to the A-10 was not supposed to be a cakewalk, but McKillop has proven time and again his Wildcats are not to be taken lightly. The Spiders' lack of tenacious rebounders will really hurt in this one, as limiting the amount of Davidson's offensive possessions is crucial when trying to down the Wildcats.
