RICHMOND SPIDERS

Richmond Spiders

Richmond Spiders VS. Arizona St. Sun Devils

Arizona State (18-15) at Richmond (20-13)

GAME NOTES: The Richmond Spiders stay home for the second round of the NIT and entertain the Arizona State Sun Devils on Sunday evening.

Arizona State, seeded fifth in the event, is coming off a road win against Connecticut, while top-seeded Richmond held off St. Francis-NY in opening- round action.

The winner will play either Miami-Florida or Alabama in the quarterfinals.

ASU is participating in its 13th NIT and first since 2013, and the Sun Devils are sporting a 7-12 record in the event. As for the Spiders, they are in the NIT for the eighth time in their history and own a record of 7-7 overall, 6-4 at home.

Terry Allen registered a double-double with 21 points and 11 rebounds in leading Richmond to an 84-74 win over St. Francis-NY on Wednesday.

Alonzo Nelson-Ododa, who was playing in just his second game back following an injury, accounted for 14 points, five rebounds and four blocked shots off the bench for the Spiders. TJ Cline, Kendall Anthony and ShawnDre' Jones all posted 12 points and Josh Jones added 11 in only 16 minutes of action.

Richmond had few worries as it converted a hefty 65.2 percent from the field in the first half en route to a 41-30 advantage at the break. St. Francis made a run, but Richmond shot 15-of-18 from the foul line to close out the win.

The Spiders, who generate 65.9 ppg, rely almost exclusively on Anthony (16.8 ppg), Allen (12.7 ppg, 6.4 rpg), Cline (11.4 ppg) and Jones (10.2 ppg) to get the job done. Foes are connecting on only 42.0 percent of their total shots, which includes a 30.7 percent showing from the perimeter, but those same opponents are winning the rebounding battle rather handily (+5.4). They do however, turn the ball over 13.5 times per contest, often giving Richmond relatively easy baskets in transition.

Also on Wednesday, Shaquielle McKissic scored a game-high 22 points as the Sun Devils defeated defending national-champion Connecticut, 68-61, at Gampel Pavilion. Also scoring in double figures for ASU were Savon Goodman with 14 points, to go with nine rebounds, and Eric Jacobsen and Gerry Blakes with 12 and 10 points, respectively.

The Sun Devils built a 37-24 halftime lead, but UConn, even without leading scorer Ryan Boatright, evened things at 59-59 with under three minutes remaining. McKissic, though, hit a big 3-pointer, a layup and two free throws down the stretch to seal the win.

McKissic has had a strong season, leading the Sun Devils in both scoring (12.3 ppg) and steals (54). Goodman, who missed a good portion of the early season, has come on down the stretch and really been a tremendous frontcourt presence, shooting an impressive 58.5 percent from the field and averaging 11.1 points and 7.2 rebounds per game. Blakes rounds out the top scoring threats at 10.9 ppg.

Richmond has won both meetings against ASU back in 1987 and 2010. Obviously times have changed, but the Spiders, playing at home, should be able to pull out another close win.

Predicted Outcome

Richmond 65, Arizona State 58
