Houston, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - Marcus Jackson scored 19 points and hit two free throws with five seconds left to push the Rice Owls past the Southern Miss Golden Eagles, 58-56, in a Conference USA matchup at Tudor Fieldhouse.

Seth Gearhart was the only other player to record double-digit scoring for the Owls (6-11, 3-3 C-USA), as he contributed 16 points and six rebounds in the win, which was the second in a row for Rice.

As for the Golden Eagles (5-12, 0-6), Chip Armelin scored 18 points and Norville Carey added 15 points.

The Golden Eagles converted on 5-of-9 shots from 3-point range and turned eight turnovers into 13 points in the first half. But the Owls shot 44 percent from the field and took a slim 31-30 lead into the midway break.

In the second half, Southern Miss shot 45.8 percent from the field and used a 17-6 run to jump out to a 10-point lead with 7:28 to play. Rice shot 47.4 percent from the field, and used a 9-0 run to get back into the contest. Some late-game free throws helped the home squad record the win.

Rice outscored Southern Miss from 3-point range, 33-24, and held a 32-23 advantage in rebounding in the team's victory.
