Rhode Island Rams VS. St. Bonaventure Bonnies

St. Bonaventure (11-6) at Rhode Island (12-5)

GAME NOTES: St. Bonaventure guns for a fourth straight victory on Sunday, as the team clashes with the Rhode Island Rams in Atlantic 10 Conference action at the Ryan Center.

The Bonnies stumbled out of the 2014 calendar year with consecutive defeats and then lost two of their first three decisions in 2015 before registering three straight triumphs. On Thursday, the team went to overtime before taking down Duquesne on the road, 100-97, marking the first time this season the Bonnies have reached triple figures.

The Rams, who are 8-1 in their own building this season, managed to snap a two-game slide earlier this week with a 59-47 victory over La Salle in Kingston. The decision also pushed the Rams to 4-2 in conference play, which ties them with the Bonnies in the league standings.

The Rams hold a 35-27 advantage in the all-time series dating back more than five decades. Last season, URI overcame a double-digit deficit to record an 87-78 win at the Reilly Center in New York.

Trailing by a point, 97-96, with under a minute left in overtime, the Bonnies took control with four straight points tallied by Jaylen Adams down the stretch to capture the win in Pittsburgh. Adams not only finished with 15 points, he also handed out 14 assists, some of which went to Marcus Posley who dropped in a game-high 36 points on 8-of-11 shooting behind the 3-point line.

Also scoring in double figures for the visitors at the Palumbo Center were Youssou Ndoye with 20 points, to go along with 15 rebounds and four blocked shots, as well as Dion Wright with 12 points in just 14 minutes of action before fouling out. As a group, the Bonnies converted 12-of-23 shots beyond the arc.

Posley, the leading scorer in two straight and eight of the last 10 outings for the Bonnies, is responsible for 18.5 ppg on the campaign. Of the unit's 103 triples over 17 contests, 53 have been registered by Posley, a 38.7 percent shooter on the perimeter. While Posley attacks foes from the outside, Ndoye handles the action on the interior, leading to 12.2 ppg, 11.0 rpg and 47 blocked shots.

La Salle's effort was anything but pretty versus the Rams, as the visitors converted just eight field goals in the first half and finished the meeting at 32.8 percent from the floor. The Explorers converted just 3-of-6 at the free- throw line and 2-of-9 on the perimeter.

The Rams may have knocked down 51.2 percent from the field, but the team struggled at the charity stripe (14-of-23) and also turned the ball over 18 times, leading to 17 points for La Salle. Gilvydas Biruta tallied 16 points and nine rebounds, but the star of the show was Hassan Martin who came up a rebound shy of a triple-double with his 14 points and a school-record 10 blocked shots.

Over the course of six conference games, Martin is averaging 12.5 points and 8.8 rebounds per outing, not to mention better than five blocked shots per contest as well. E.C. Matthews is responsible for 16.7 ppg and also lends a hand on the glass with 5.8 rpg. Unfortunately, the team is struggling on the perimeter with just 25.4 percent accuracy, but at least the opposition is in a similar boat (.268).

As long as Martin can put forth even a fraction of the effort he did the last time out, the Rams could be in for another home victory this weekend.
