Recap: Quinnipiac vs. Yale
Hamden, CT (SportsNetwork.com) - Zaid Hearst poured in 35 points to lead the Quinnipiac Bobcats to an 89-85 double-overtime victory over the Yale Bulldogs in a non-conference thriller at TD Bank Sports Center as part of the Connecticut 6 Classic. .
Hearst finished 12-of-20 from the floor for the Bobcats (1-0), who also received a double-double of 13 points and 15 rebounds courtesy of Ousmane Drame. Evan Conti also made his mark for Quinnipiac with 13 points and six assists, while Kasim Chandler tallied 12 points, eight boards and six assists. Justin Harris provided the hosts with a spark off the bench, netting 12 points on 5-of-6 shooting from the field in 20 minutes of action.
Javier Duren paced Yale (0-1) with 26 points on 50 percent efficiency from the field. Justin Sears registered a double-double with 23 points and 12 rebounds, while Jack Montague chipped in 12 points.
The Bulldogs took a 40-38 lead into the intermission after they shot 42.4 percent from the field and forced Quinnipiac into eight turnovers in the opening 20 minutes of play. Duren made 7-of-8 field goal tries to post 19 points in the first half.
The Bobcats overcame the narrow deficit in the second half by limiting the visitors to a 37 percent clip from the floor. Drame grabbed 12 boards and four blocks in the second period before overcoming a foul to make a layup with 22 seconds left in regulation to tie the contest at 67. Drame missed a potential go-ahead free-throw attempt, but made up for it and forced an extra session with a last second swat of a Duren jumper.
Yale fell behind, 74-68, early in the first overtime period, but Sears delivered five points on its next two possessions to give the visitors a chance. Chandler extended Quinnipiac's lead to 76-73, with 23 seconds remaining with a made free-throw try, but failed to put the game out of reach as his second shot at the charity stripe fell off the mark. Montague drilled a game-tying 3-pointer on the Bulldogs' next possession to force an additional extra session.
Quinnipiac scored on the opening play of the second overtime period and led the rest of the way. Drame finished the contest with seven blocked shots and played a big factor in the Bobcats' 54-38 edge in the rebounding battle.
